All people should have the right to marry who they want. Whether they be Straight or Gay. People are People and they should all have the right to happiness and perks (such as insurance) that marriage or a civil union provide. Peg I appreciate your opinion and I urge all people to be honest about their feelings on this topic......But if marriage is just for people to have children then a man and women who do not want to have children should not get married.......or a woman who has had her tubes tied or a man who has had a vasectomy who are not already married should not get married because their plumbing no longer works. For me as an individual I agree with peg that the plumbing is all wrong for me as well......but for gay and lesbian people they see the plumbing as being perfect and having no leaks.....As i always say to each their own...LET FREEDOM RING!!!!!
When I look just at the contractual relationship formed by a marriage I see lowering of federal income tax because of the ability to file jointly. If the federal government recognized 'civil unions' and/or gay marriages as 'married, filing jointly,' then because these couples pay less tax, we are all in effect subsidizing their union. Personally, I'm against it, the plumbing is just all wrong.
I agree with Mary Beth.
I think many religious people would still object to Civil Union since many religious people think homosexuality in it self is a sin.......which i disagree with...If their is a God and he created everyone then God created Homosexuals as well. Here is the definition of marriage as stated on Merriam-Webster website: "1 a (1) : the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law (2) : the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage" It says as recognized by law not by religion. Therefor Marriage can be between two people of the same sex if it is recognized by law. It is still a marriage just not a traditional marriage. As we grow as society things Change and so has the meaning of Marriage.
I think the issue is the word "Marriage". This is a religious term. Whereas civil union is not. Maybe there would be less objections if they changed the terminology.

In the U.K. legally it is a civil partnership but every one calls it a marriage except a few people who are mostly thugs.
