So he's basically saying foreign people are not welcome here in America. Foreign people need to eat, too.

It's not discrimination if it's possible for the customer to adapt. Think about it like this: "discrimination against black people" is a true statement because black people CANNOT simply be un-black. "discrimination against non-English speakers" is a false statement because they COULD learn English with some effort. If you can adapt in order to bypass the "discrimination" then it's simply NOT discrimination in the first place.

I have said it before and I will say it again, when the germans and the japanese came to this country after WWII they learned to speak english. We did not have to learn thier language. When a person can not get a job in this country because they cannot speak spanish, there is something wrong. I learned to speak German when my father was stationed there instead of taking spanish in school. Now I am being punished for that descision because I don't speak Spanish. In every other aspect I qualify for a job, with the exception of speaking Spanish. The USA is not a bilingual country it is an English speaking country. If the Germans and Japanese could do it then the Spanish speaking immigrants can do it.

this is stupid. The sing does NOT say this is american, please speak english AT HOME, TO YOUR FAMILY, IN YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE, etc. The sign says please speak english WHEN ORDERING. If you come to my restaurant and start speaking another language to order your food, i WILL NOT be able to help you. It has nothing to do with ignorance or discrimination. If i was in another coutry Id expect the same. I would expect them to want me to order in their language.

This is America. If you went to mexico would they speak english for you.NO I was a group leader at Sanford corp. in shelbyville tn. & told I could keep my job if I learn to speak spanish. That was so wrong. Speak English

This is America, people!!! The primary language in English. If you live here, and are an American citizen it should be mandatory to speak it!!!!

Did your ancestors speak English when they came? Mine didn't; they spoke German and an Irish-Gaelic dialect. When the first Englishmen came here, did they speak the tribal langauge of the indigineous people who were already here? There is no difference here, so be consistent.

 I need your support to turn this effort in solid real action plan, this can be done, with positive thinking and action.    The answer is simple. I Support Joe Vento - Keep the sign in the window. City of Philadelphia spend time and money running the city and making it a better place to live and work! 

i don't personally think mr. vento is being prejudice. he is a businessman and has to deal with a lot of people everyday. the best way to speak to him is clearly and in english. if you can't speak english clearly, get somebody to order for you who can. merry christmas.

I have to teach my employees to speak a million languages rather than someone learning, cheese steak with?  Gimme a break.  If I went to France I would expect to have to speak French to order my food.  I may not like what I get but that's my fault, but hey, when in France...

Why are we spending time and money on this? This is America isn't it. Mr. Vento has done a lot for a lot of people in the city of Philadelphia and out of the city. No one was refused, no harm, no foul, lets move on, and let freedom (of speech) ring.  

I believe it is a straight forward issueIt is his business - if he prefers people to order in English I do not consider that discrimination. If a French or Chinese Restaurant owner preferred that customers order in that language I do not believe that would be discrimination either.It is his business so he has the freedom of speech to request that his customers order in English.

If you don’t speak English, there is no guarantee that you will get what you ordered.

I personally don't care for the sign, but it is Joe's business decision, not mine or the city of Philadelphia's.

Look, I do not understand why some people are raising a stink about this.  Here is my logic......If the customer can't speak English then more then likely he can't read it.  So…. he will order any way because he can't read the sign!  We have freedom of speech and expression in this country and if Joe wants to hang the sign in his window he has that right.  If  the sign offends you that much don't eat there....Just stop crying about it!

If people don't want to learn English, the primary language of our country, they will be forever handicapped in their dealings here.  They should have stayed in the country that spoke their preferred language.
