I am an avid bonfire enthusiast.  I love having bonfires in the fire pit in my back yard.  I will have them for any excuse imaginable, 4^th of July, graduation, Friday.  It doesn’t matter.  The ideal time for bonfires is in the spring and fall when it cools down at night enough to want to be near the fire, but not too much forcing you to be right next too it.  I feel that marshmallows are optional but if introduced I think gram crackers and chocolate should be mandatory.  My favorite thing to roast is hot dogs.  In that situation rolls and condiments are optional.  Another optional item I acquired last year is the tiki torch.  I think the tiki torches should be reserved for special occasions and gatherings with close friends.  They provide ample light and ambiance making you feel like you are at some sort of island native celebration.  But if used too often they become less special.  Plus they do slightly insult the fire who really wants to be the sole provider of light and entertainment.
