Description:

You know what time it is.

February 6th is approaching for us Californians, and we all have the right to go to the polls and cast our vote as to who we believe should be the next president. But there is a huge group of politically active, educated, Californians that is underrepresented when it comes voting. Who are these people getting shafted?

College Students!

How many of you go to college at or near to the county you grew up in? Not many of us in California do. That is why I propose that we, as young and educated adults, should be able to vote at the college in which we attend.

During every election, political correspondents complain that the 18-24 age group does not vote. Of course not! We shouldn't be forced to deal with absentee ballots. We shouldn't have to make the trek back to our hometown to vote during the middle of the quarter. We should not have to change our voting district when most of us don't even know if we will be here in the next 4 years. We already live in a politcally active environment being at college, and should not be forced to leave our atmosphere to vote!

So I know you agree with me. This is a bipartisan petition. There are no drawbacks here. Please help me (and yourselves) by signing this petiton, and together we can make a change!

Good idea!

For the record: I am a Marine stationed in Okinawa, Japan. In accordance, I am glad to see the future leaders of America creating reasonable petitions! I would like to begin with statistics; The Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning & Engagement, states in the article "Quick Facts about Young Voters: 2004"; "Number of 18-24 year old American citizens eligible to vote: 24.9 million
Number of people in this group who voted in the 2004 elections: 11.7 million or 47%
Number of American citizens over 25 eligible to vote: 172.1 million
Number of citizens over 25 who voted in the 2004 elections: 114.1 million or 66%." We as Americans have a standard obligation to decide who is set to lead our country for the upcoming, four-eight, years. Having stated this, I would like to back my argument by stating; "Please watch the presidential campaigns and debates to better equip your judgement on whom you believe to be the best candidate!" To address the issue at hand, I would like to say; "I believe college students should be able to vote from their respected school." As a Marine stationed on Okinawa, the government allows us to vote from Okinawa. I don't see how this is any different! Thank you for your time. NeoSwede~

Great point... thanks for pointing out the fact that you can vote from where you are stationed!

Yet more of these people vote for "American Idol" than they do for government. I just tought I'd throw that out there. They'd rather vote for the "Next Big Star" than the next president. I'd like to see more college-aged students take more of a political view and vote on important issues. My question, though, is if so few of them actually voted for their politicians, why are so many of them complaining about the state in which our country is in? What did they do to try and change the outcome?

Great way to state the obvious! Too many people complain about the cut of their meat but, they are unwilling to become a butcher! If you want change, you have to attack opportunities when avialable. Voting is a great opportunity for change: Attack!
