Disaster Animal Preparedness

9 Pledges
  • Start Date:
    8-22-2007
  • Last Pledge:
    10-8-2007

Issue:

Hurricane Katrina's victims were not only human. Be prepared; don't let your pet/animal become a natural disaster refugee.

Belief:

Educate yourself on what disasters are likely to hit your area, how they are caused/formed, where to go in the case of such disasters, and what evacuation routes you should take. See http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=pets_emergency on what to put in an emergency kit.

I pledge to...

be prepared for disasters in my area by making an emergency kit and plan for myself, my family, and my pets/animals.

My family and I had the bad fortune to be in Grenada during Hurricane Ivan.  It was a cat 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 145 knots and gusts to 195 knots.  We had our 2 children and our two dogs with us.  Fortunately, Grenada does not discriminate against family pets in the shelters and all were safe at the end of the hurricane.  This is not the case in many places in the US - I really could not have seen leaving my dogs to fend for themselves.  In the US, we really need to plan for emergencies!
