Don't drive on June 25 - enough with gas prices

19 Pledges
  • Start Date:
    4-24-2008
  • Last Pledge:
    6-25-2008

Description:

Not buying gas on a particular day doesn't really change anything. The entire country staying off the road for a day might.

  • If you need to get to work; use public transportation or bike or walk
(maybe it'll start a new thing for you:-)
  • If you can work at home, stay home
  • Take the day off and go for a walk
  • If you drive a police car, ambulance, firetruck, bus... do what you gotta do

Start planning now how you'll stay off the roads

Spread the word!

Let's make a statement and hurt the environment a little less for one day.

Maybe we can make it a habit!

I pledge to...

Thanks for those that supported this. I heard after the fact that some of my friends didn't pledge but also didn't drive. But, I sure didn't promote this enough to make an impact.

Don't like gas prices? Blame it on hedge funds and Wall Street speculators which oil priced twice at what it should. However do use less gas to cut down pollution.

I pledge not to drive on June 25.... my colleague whom I carpoll with? I hope he does.

How about adding carpooling to the list? I carpool 4-5 times a week.

If high gas prices mean cleaner air, I'm all for it. Take it up to $10/gal! Our children's future are worth a little sacrifice now.

IT'S ABOUT TIME WE GOT SOMETHING ROLLING----WE NEED TO DO MORE---I remember years ago hearing about the gas prices abroad and thinking, jeez, am I glad I live here. Yeah, right, great, what a joke. Land of the free, home of the brave. We need to take these words to bed with us @ night! It used to mean something. We need ACTIONS to go along with the strength of the great meaning behind, in front of and along side of those words. Let's get going AMERICANS 4 AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!! BLESSINGS & MIRACLES. It only takes one (1) person to make a difference----remember that!

These gas prices are killing AMERICA!!!!!!

It's very difficult for the vast majority of people to NOT drive for a day. It's obviously VERY disruptive. Certainly not driving therefore sends a strong signal. But it's also such a high bar to clear that most people won't pledge to participate in this.

Don't drive on June 25 is a good start, but, people would need an alternative to get to work and places. I like the idea that people can bike to work. In Europe, people can ride bike from place to place and drop it off at any bike station for usage by next person. Biking to places whenever possible will save gas and improve cleaness of the environment. Any other alternatives for solutions?

I need to get the word out more. This campaign is not moving along like I'd hoped.

Gas is getting too expensive.

I pledge not to drive on June 25

Hey, look, we're on myspace (see my trackback?)

Wow, I was hoping that this would get more traction by now. There's still time, I guess, but a long way to go.

I could walk to work but it is on dangerous highways. I will have to work from home that day. Worth it to help save the environment.

However... a more effective method would be to start getting your gas at ARCO, or your nearest discount gas dealer. just not the big boys like Amoco, Shell, Exxon etc. cause the bigger players to have to go into a price war to keep their income. Yes the deflating dollar is a factor, but the record breaking profits and bonuses were there before the dollar slipped so far. your plan is a good step, since most people cannot avoid the use of their cars even for one day, so they just may not buy gas that day. they will still buy the fuel, just on the day before, or after. going a full week will get attention. but still we will be back at the pumps to give them our cash.

Everyone is going broke over these stupid gas prices and grocery prices, let alone jobs with lousy incomes is getting harder for everyone to make living on anyhow. Most people rather pay gas when it used to be a quarter in the olden days, why not NOW!!!!!!!!!

Why not make hybrid cars more affordable so we can all drive one? - the Henry Ford theory.
Pure and simple economics...Supply and Demand will take over and the price will be lowered.

Agreed - that would be a perfectly sensible tax break - which we used to have but was eliminated at a time when a tax break (loophole?) for trucks resulting in a lot of people running out and buying 3 ton Hummers - see http://abcnews.go.com/Bus iness/story?id=...

I can not pledge this for that day. I am happy that you have created ideas and a discussion on this but I am not sure that a boycott on driving (which hurts drivers as well as oil companies) is the best way to resolve this issue. I am not sure that oil companies are the enemy at all. They are in business to make a profit like other businesses. Do you not believe in capitalism to resolve fair prices in the market? I would rather support alternative energy sources investment, tax incentives, added taxes on "excess" oil profits (to be defined), etc. I drive a SUV and I believe I have a right to do so as long as it is legal to do so. This is a global and a national issue but complaining about gas prices and trying to stick it to the companies that supply the gas does not seem to me to be the best approach. I hope this enhances the discussion and leads to other creative ideas on this topic.

My intent in proposing this campaign is not to 'hurt' drivers or oil companies. The people who are hurting the most right now are those making substandard wages that can't afford to drive to their minimum wage jobs.

This campaign is about focusing on an issue and stirring up debate. It's already started to succeed:-)

I don't mind the idea of taxing 'excess' profits, but I don't see how that could be considered capitalism.

I have a suspicion that the 'excess' profits are due to price fixing and control of supply. Price fixing and the virtual monopoly that it creates are not capitalism and are not legal in the US.

Reducing our consumption could go a long way to shifting the supply and demand ratio.

I'll have to break out the tricycle with the tassles.
WATCH OUT....

I think a better idea would be for all investors to threaten to sell all of their stock in the major oil companies, driving down the value and valuation. That would get their attention!

Rallying investors is an excellent idea. Nothing wrong with doing both.
