Description:
To the producers of "Desperate Housewives" and ABC:
In the 9/30 episode of Desperate Housewives, Susan remarked to her gynecologist (who told her she might be hitting menopause) "Can I just check those diplomas because I just want to make sure that they are not from some med school in the Philippines."
We demand a public apology to the Filipino community, and want that episode to be edited to remove the racist comment.
as an american student who attended the University of Santo Tomas in the philippines , I can vouch for the quality of education. All classes in English, Same textbooks as USA med schools, all teachers there received Us training. We all helped each other as students. Teachers were wonderful and patient. I'd do it again over a US med school.
It's not a joke. You don't mock a country's dignity and say it's all a show and it's a joke. That is the lamest excuse ever!
Oh Pleeez!! It's a TV show, get over it!!!
Besides don't you think there is alot more important issues to deal with? Why not take a stand for how you treat people in the real world? And to be honest, the character is not necessarily PC so that is something she might say. Have you ever watched SOPRANOS? That is exceedingly rampant with slurs and jokes, it's just a portrait of make believe characters. I don't look down on any race, or class, people should be judged by how they treat others. Give a smile to someone else, and let the anger go. It's a waste of energy and thought.
Yea get over it, it's a joke, and if everytime they said something funny on tv was viewed as wrong well there would be sooo many apologies to be made. Lighten up.
I don't see this as a racist comment. I thought it was a dig at medical schools outside the US. Susan was questioning whether the guy graduated from a US medical school. She could have easily said any other country.
ABC hiring Fil-Am talents to make up for ‘Desperate Housewives’

WASHINGTON — Hiring Filipino on-camera and behind-camera talents, incorporating dialogues and plot lines to popular ABC-TV shows depicting the contributions of Filipino Americans in the nation’s healthcare system, and including healthcare, arts and advocacy experts as guests in news programs.
These are some of the actions the network will take as restitution for the racial slur in a dialogue in a recent “Desperate Housewives" episode, as well as in implementing its diversity policy.
Steve McPherson, president of ABC primetime entertainment, met with community leaders in the network’s office in Burbank, California last week.
McPherson even suggested a plotline for “Boston Legal," about a Filipino American lawyer suing the government for the injustice to Filipino World War II veterans. He requested leaders to send him background materials on this issue. This is not expected to happen overnight, considering the writers’ strike, but community leaders hailed the relationship-building efforts targeted at Filipino Americans.
McPherson has won recognition from the Directors Guild of America for his “outstanding commitment to and leadership in the hiring of women and ethnic minorities." He made a commitment to continue building on the relationship with the Filipino American community.
“Mc-Pherson acknowledged the ‘Domestic Housewives’ racial slur was ‘a terrible mistake’ and ‘should not have happened.’McPherson also assured the group that scriptwriter Marc Cherry and their Standards and Practices Department, “and everyone who needed to be talked to were talked to," to prevent racial slurs from taking place again.
FILIPINOS: LET'S THANK GOD FOR THIS VINDICATION.
oh my god here we go with 9/11 again..you people I just don't get it you feel bad for what happen or whatever but why did you bash people like my girlfriend who is half Iraqy and half Mexican and about as bad is acussing me an my cousin of being those Iraqy,we are Mexican born and raised in American, you seemed to forget how well you greated alot of us after 9/11.I don't even watch the show but i love Marcia Cross but do have Filipino friends and know how they feel about what was said, its like getting the dirty looks my family gets going anywhere, looked down on even though we are legally here, and to update they did apologise like the next day and have my support they did the right thing and I had to redo the marcia cross, always get her and melinda clark's named mixed up once in a while, both very beutiful
I don't even remember that so like other long time viewers not many of us remember because its not a big deal
You know what?!
If everything was a descriminating factor, there would come a timel, we would not utter a word thinking the next one will be offensive I think this should stop, otherwise all the shows in the world and every frase we say will not be adecuate to somebody, so we will stop talking all together.
Want an apology? Fine, you can have that but on't try to take my show off the air just because you hold a grudge. There are many shows that makes offensive comments all the time about everyone and yet they manage to stay on the air. Lighten up! Everyone gets picked on from time to time, i know my religion gets a lot of that, but you know what, that's life. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but that's all it is. Don't make a bigger deal out of this than it really is. Learn how to accept crticism whether it's constructive or not, it's part of being an adult.
Hi Liz H, As a matter of fact that horse is mine, Nevertheless, You are absolutely right, MORE PRAYER is all I need by now, I appreciated that.. Good luck to you baby...
Maybe you may think they are just some words, but they did really have racialism meanig which might hurt peole of that country.
Hope the productor would pay more attention to it and avoid racism words! Still be a good series.
To jennie N
Stop 'talking'. . . . the more you talk, the more you gain Filipino enemies! MABUHAY ANG MGA PILIPINOS!
Who are you to tell me to stop talking? Let me guess, your prejudice too!!!
Freedom of speech, or haven't you heard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's true what I hear, some of you are extremely revengeful, you just proved that!
people, people..... it's just a tv show.. and i personally think that the show is not that good, anyway!!! also. a lot of minority groups get "insulted" in american tv shows... and even their presidents get insulted... ha ha ha .... so chin up, mga kabayans!!!! as they say, "sticks and stones can hurt my bones, but life goes on!!!". eh? huh? hahahaha...
disappointing talaga to discover na hindi lang pala Kano ang racist towards sa atin. pati na rin pala yung sarili nating kababayan; na kung sino nang "feeling" porque nakaabot lang sa estados unidos. (u know hu u r!)
remember nu lang sana, kahit pa born, raised and died in the states kayo, PINOY PA RIN KAAYO. kahit ano pang retoke gawin nu, PINOY PA RIN KAYO. so please, kunting sympathy naman dyan.
i admit na insulto ako sa comment, basically dahil taga hospital din ako. graduate ako sa isang prestigious school, and super proud ako of that fact. tapos insultuhin ba naman tayo nang ganun?? if Filipino doctors are THAT bad, how come meron pa ring gumagaling? how come hindi lahat nang na-aadmit namamatay? think of that!!
truth is, ALL, and i mean ALL races both have good and bad doctors. remember that!!
Well, if we don't take heed of our own selves, who care? who will? We have no time to live in the past yet life is full constant learning, Let's chill out and purify our mind... Mind yourself jenieN.
Well,
