Description:

Japanese companies and local governments, most are covered under public health care or through their work, must now measure the waistlines of Japanese people over 40 as part of their annual checkups. Those exceeding government limits, 33.5 inches for men and 35.4 inches for women, will be given dieting guidance if they do not lose weight. Companies and local governments who do not meet specific targets will be fined. Japan’s Ministry of Health argues that the campaign will keep the spread of diseases like diabetes and strokes in check.

Dr. Minoru Yamakado said he endorsed the government’s focus on preventive medicine, but he thinks the government’s real priority should be to reduce smoking rates.

Forum Discussion for Government mandating your weight

In China, you need a license to get pregnant. Sure, it takes away rights - but look at it this way... there are no teenage girl pacts in highschool to get pregnant in China.

If healthcare is given FREE by the state, I think the state has a right to ask it's citizens to be healthy to reduce costs. Can you imagine that in the US with a national healthcare system? Asking Americans to stay a 34 waist or thinner? There would be a stampede out of krispy kreme.

I think the gov't should give guidelines but not control our health. Next they will be dictating who can get pregnant...
