Hang Up and Drive - Ban Cell Phone use in PA

Issue:

Dialing numbers, receiving calls and holding conversations on cell phones while driving eats away at the concentration required of motorists. Beyond the tragic human toll of fatalities caused by drivers distracted by cell phones, scientific studies have established correlations between cell phone usage and accidents. A study of 699 Canadian drivers with cell phones found that \"the risk of a collision when using a cellular telephone was four times higher than the risk when a cellular telephone was not being used\".

Belief:

We believe that driving while holding your cellphone is not only dangerous to the one driving the vehicle and his/her passengers but also to the pedestrians and the other people outside of the vehicle.

Cell phones should have a button that tells a caller "sorry but I am in my car. Leave a message and I will return the call when it is safe."If you originate the call while driving you should be fined.
headsets dont help much. The problem is lack of consentration while driving. Use of cell phones as well as headsets should be banned. If you text message while driving you should go to jail.

how about once they prove that you were on you phone when the accident happens (o and they can u know), or if they have to pull u over 'cause u were on the phone. You go to jail just as if u were drinking and driving, do the same amount of timeand they call it (DRIVING WHILE IMPAIRED)D.W.I. hmm, I think I like it

thye should ban them in all states

I do not own a cell phone and after what I have observed and witnessed every day on the roads in So Cal and everywhere for that matter...I hate them.  MAJORITY OF CELL PHONE USERS ARE MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY UNABLE TO TALK AND DRIVE.  I am sick of having to hear other peoples conversations while walking, shopping and using public restrooms about what someone said about someone else and what the hell they are having for dinner or are planning for the weekend.  I dont want to hear your converstion.  I know that I am the minority on this but my lord people, give those around you a break.  It is so unbelievable.  No one cares about anyone else...it is all about me, me, me.  SUCKS BIG TIME!!  Thank god that now I know I am not alone...after reading thru all of these comments...I feel better!!  BUT I STILL HATE THEM.

CBs (Citizen band radios) Every trucker had (still has), every motorist. Thing is they were awkward, mounted under the dash, under the front seat. People were constantly changing channels, adjusting the squelch, getting into heated arguments, etc etc. You tell me the CB was NOT more of a distraction and danger than a cell phone! There was never a public outcry or campaign to regulate their use while driving. How many accidents do you know of that were a direct result of CB use? Come on people.
when you stop to think most people can't walk down the street and chew gum at the same time without tripping or falling .Why would anyone want to see people driving with a phone stuck to their ear.most people can't talk and drive when someons is in the car with them it worse when the other person their talkimg to isn't there.to many hand gestures like they can see what your doing.
I heard that your more likely to get into an accident while talking on a cell phone then if your driving drunk. But I don't recommend trying either.
Why is the auto industry not jumping on this opportunity and adding a place to plug your phone in so you can have a 'handsfree' use? Everyone is using one! Get with it.
I think you've got something there.
YES: Stay Alive - HANG UP and Drive" could definitely get some attention.
A "punitive fine" for people who cause accidents while using their cell phone. I would be all for it. 1. Lets get a fine in place for cell abusers. 2. Create a bumper sticker "Click It Off or You'll Pay". (Show a Cell Phone on the sticker) 3. Use the fine money collected for some noble to be determined?
How about Stay Alive - HANG UP and Drive ?
A penalty for causing an accident while on the phone sounds good to me. I was sitting at a light this morning and got bumped from behind. The light was still red and the guy had been sitting behind me for a minute. He drifted into me. I had noticed him earlier when he cut someone off. He was slouched down in his seat with his phone in his ear, like he was sitting on the couch at home. Thankfully, it didn't hurt my car. He apologized and I suggested he might want to get off the phone and drive!
I'm all for, as suggested by Peg, a "punitive fine" for people who cause accidents while using their cell phone.
I'm all for, as suggested by Peg, a "punitive fine" for people who cause accidents while using their cell phone. I've seen to many near accidents & accidents from cell phone use
Do we need to compromise...What about a hands-free solution in car where the cell phone shuts off automatically after 1 minute?
If it is hands free then why do you need a time limit? Actually it may cause more problems because people will be trying to fit in more in a short period of time and get flustered. Plus I do not see what the difference is of talking hands free or talking to someone in the passenger seat. I think hands free is ok if the whole phone is voice activated and you do not have to dial numbers while driving.
Actually, studies have shown that there is a difference between talking to someone in the passenger seat and talking to someone on the phone. Apparently, some part of one's brain is preoccupied with visualizing that person if they're not present. I was bummed when I heard this because I rely on my handsfree in my car.
I really don't see the hype with the "ooohhh gotta talk on my cell phone"! I mean come on! What ever happened to the good ol' days when if you wanted to talk on the phone, you did it in the privacy of your own home, aggravating YOUR family. Instead, now seeing someone without a phone or some device strapped in their ears is rare! I really don't see the point, need, and reason behind talking on the phone just to talk. What in the F*** is there to say every waking minute of the day? Granted, cell phones make business run smoother, and are great for emergencies and to have "just in case". It seems every time I happen to avoid near death while in my vehicle ( with my one year old in it as well) it is due to the carelessness/recklessness of the other driver on their cell phone. It angers me that someone could be that thoughtless, that careless. Nevermind caring for the safety for others, but not even for themselves! I've vowed to my husband, God forbid we're ever in an accident, should it be caused by such negligence and I'm physically able, I will beat the ever loving $hi+ out of the other driver and tell them to call the cops on their CELLPHONE!!!! I think that there should be a chip in the phones and in the cars that render one or the other inoperable if both are operating at the same time. (In my perfect little dictatorship, that's how it would be)..... Breathing deeply now 1. 2. 3. 4........
I have a cell phone with me always in case of emergency (family+). If it rings while I'm driving I answer it or if there's someone else in the car, I ask them to. I keeping the conversation short by telling the caller I'm driving. I don't think banning cell usage is a good idea, the only idea I can think of is to create a punitive fine for people who cause accidents while on the cell phone.
Let us unite together: Ban cell phone use in cars!!!
A driver came within inches of hitting me while talking on her cell phone. It was in a mall parking lot and she was searching for a space, going 5 mph yet she did not see me in the legal crosswalk. I hate cell phones.
A NJ State Assembly committee approved legislation last week to prohibit drivers from text-messaging on cell phones and using devices such as BlackBerrys to exchange e-mails while behind the wheel. How can you not approve this?
If someone wants to use a cell phone and they are driving in a car or big truck then the person should pull off the road. Driving a car or truck is a full time job that need full time attention. Would you want to live with possibly killing someone with your car just because you got into the bad habit of using a cell while driving?? Cell phones and cars don't mix and can KILL !!! Even hands free can take your attention of the road for a split second!
There is no doubt that driving while talking on a cell phone is distracting. I have observed vary degrees of attentiveness by drivers while talking. I do agree that uniform laws should be enacted across the country, although I do not agree that talking while driving should be banned. I think that "hands free" should become law in all states.
I agree
I think that there should be laws limiting cell phone usage while driving. I was hit from behind twice in one year while "sitting at a red light" by people who were on their cell phones. And, both times there were at least 5 other cars next to me and/or in front of me. I was not the only car sitting at the red light. Both people were on the phone and not paying attention to what they were doing .... driving! Oh, and by the way, I have never been hit by a drunk driver.
I am enjoying the comments in this forum. I am not for government intervention on all issues but when people can't police themselves on an issue such as using cell phones in cars then something needs to be done!!
the only phones in cars should be car phones which should be unable to be used untill the car is stoped and put in the park postion that way no one can get hurt and it will be there for a imergancy. if you have a cellphone its for imergencies mainly business now it is led to believe that cell phones are needed to be part of socity. But back to the point cell phone use in a car should not be a law but should be like wearing a helmet while riding a motercycle. you should have the option but if you crash the person with the cell phone should be100% responsible in every way!!!
