Description:

Be the first to tell your friends and family you helped name the satellite that will give new insight into the nature of the universe.

Help NASA with naming the cutting edge Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope, otherwise known as GLAST, observatory before it launches in mid-2008. The satellite will observe some of the most energetic sources of radiation in the universe.

The name can be no longer than 30 characters and also must include an explanation of no more than 25 words for each suggestion.

GLAST Education and Public Outreach

When coming up with your suggestion, please consider the following:
  • The deadline for submissions is March 31, 2008.
  • The name should capture the excitement of GLAST’s mission, bringing attention to gamma rays and high-energy astronomy.
  • The name should be catchy, something that people will talk about.
  • Make it simple and easy to say. Nothing says complex and inaccessible like a mouthful of acronyms.
  • In keeping with NASA tradition, the satellite will not be named after a person who is still living.
  • Finally, the name must be original and not associated with any past, present or future astronomical observatory or space mission (domestic or international) or any NASA program. Sorry, Voyager fans!
Anyone who suggests a name in our forum section will receive a "Certificate of Participation" from NASA via return e-mail, and their name will be entered into drawing to win a year's worth of online telescope time donated by SLOOH, the Live Online Observatory.  All names and statements submitted by you become the property of NASA and will not be acknowledged or returned. Your e-mail address will not be provided to others but will be used only for providing you a "Certificate of Participation".  Your name may be used in a NASA, SLOOH or YouChoose.net press release.

WHY NOT CALL IT 'HOPE'

GALASAT

I would suggest it to be named "The Unquestionable Truth". This would be a great name of satelite with capabilities that large.

yes ty for the chance to name this

sherry

I think we should name it after September 11 in Honer Of Are Troops Fighting For Us and that have died trying to save us all So it should be called

SEPTEMBER 11TH 2001
GOD BLESS

The GOP (Gamma Observation Platform)

Or maybe the Firefly

Just because that sounds cool

Oh and it is still monday where i'm at

I think it should maybe be called Telescope- sjust to be unoringinal

Or Amazing

Or Spacetastic Telescope

Or Flubber off the disney movie

Perhaps it should be called the Sword of Omens. This sword was in the old Thundercats animated series. It was created from part magic and part technology and gave the user "sight beyond sight" which seems fitting for a such a far reaching telescope and may also attract a younger group into astronomy.

PROWLER

INFINITY 360

STRATEGY

PEANUT ( the telescope, like the peanut, is not limited to one specific task.)

I like the name, "Millennium". I chose this word as a name because it has a powerfully grasp on a person when they hear it. Things in this word only come around once a millennium. So why not have a Satellite orbiting the earth called Millenium. It has a nice ring to it, and when you hear about the satellite on a report or the News, they will always have a catchy little way of starting off a story.

hey how about naming the new satelite the Gamma-Search

I propose "GRAEC" as an acronym for gamma ray & astrophysics/exploration & intelligence gathering control module to demonstrate GLAST's design for exploring and discovering secrets of deep space

OR alternatively: "GRAECI", gamma ray & astrophysics/exploration control & intelligence gathering module to demonstrate GLAST's basic functionality of gaining elemental astrophysical information from deep space through exploration.

My proposal is "Democritus" (Democritus was a famous pre-Socratic Greek materialist philosopher, the propounder of "atomism", also interested in astronomy, mathematics e.t.c.) or "Democritus Radio Adventures Satellite" : D.R.A.S.

The Vagtastic Voyager

i think it shouled bc call the nasascope
nasa for nasa and scope for scope for telescope

i think it should be called the nasascope
nasa for nasa and scope for telescope

I suggest STOGA for space telescope for observation of gamma ray

Spimpact-from my favorite game onmy sister's moblie Space Impact

Gally- in memory of Gallileo

I think it should be called Gammera after the scifi creature of the 60's. This creature was at first thought to be harmful but later came to be the protector of children. Eventually it was sent into space where it could no longer do harm. Now this telescope can inspire all to search for whatever may await us in deep space.

Gamma Believer
I thought love was only true in fairy tales.......then I saw her rays, now I'm a believer!

Opal: the gemstone has many beautiful milky colors, the have gas-filled cavities. Opal reflects light of colors or auras across the visible spectrum just like the atmosphere. Opal also inspires imagination and hope. Opal was my foster-mothers name she was a ray of light and she was a Gamma!!! she is now a star in the atmosphere.

THE ECHELON - means waves, word from song:"What's with the fascination with the Echelon, What's with the constant questions that you have this time..."

PROVEHITO IN ALTUM - latin term or phrase, means: Reach for the heights / Launch forth into the deep

VALHALLA- The term 'Valhalla' has entered popular usage for an ideal, heaven-like destiny.

ARGUS APOCRAPHEX - Argus Apocraph means "Hidden away from sight", Ex means "No more" so together means “Hidden away from sight no more/The unveiling of something big”.

ARGOS - name of the king's son Argos Panoptes, he was a giant with one hundred eyes and very effective guardian, when some eyes were sleeping, different still awake.

space mirror

The light.

i like Galilei-GLAST because galileo had such an important contribution in the improvement in the telescope and also he was called the father of modern and observational astronomy so this is like a tribute to him and GLAST is the acronym for GAMMA-ray Large AREA TELEScope...
