Description:

In 1958, Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act to create NASA.  NASA has since put a man on the moon, put a space station in orbit, launched missions to the Moon, Mars, the solar system, and beyond, and of course there is the GLAST satellite that YouChoose members were recently involved with.

The future of NASA is in question.  Do you think it is a waste of tax payers money or do you want to see a man on Mars?

Forum Discussion for Is NASA a Waste of Money?

Ive always believed that exploring space will answer so many question we've asked for thousands of years. Whats out their? Whos out their? We might not find answers to them easily or quickly, but we cant let politics and lack of imagination stop us. Where would we be today if Apollo wasnt cancelled on purely politcal grounds? Maybe we would have had bases on the moon by now and already be well on our way to mars.

What exactley is the question here? It is not a waste of money. Money is actualy the problem in the first place. Money has been retarding the space program as well as the human species for as long as I can remember. It should not cost anything to retreive a raw material from the ground, melt it down, form it to shape and use it for what ever we can. The only cost should be the raw material itself. The biggest problem that NASA has faced as far as Space Exploration is that, and I quote: "We do not have the budget" The International Space Station is around 90% - 100% complete. If any of you truley do care, then you would use one of your main resources to understand exactly what NASA is up to these days by watching the NASA channel once in a while. It may be boring, but there are NO commercials. Once ISS is complete, we will begin to build on the moon and the human species needs all the help it can get. Would I like to see man on Mars? ABSOLUTELY!!!, but for now, we MUST focus on the Moon.

I love these conversations, if anyone has more/better information please feel free to e-mail me at ebretag@gmail.com

no nasa not a waste but they need to figure out how to get man further the milky way

the investation to other planet is a dreem that is real and thank, thank you very much NASA los admiro us are the best

ok it's very good I don't know but is well idea....and of course the security of everybody

No, it is not a waste of money! The benefits of space exploration are endless. Satellites are just one example. Satellites help us to predict weather trends which in turn saves lives.

Do you think it is a waste of tax payers money (No, it is not a waste of money what are we doing then wait for our doom?) or do you want to see a man on Mars?(Yes, we see that venus is somelike earth but jsut having a troubled greenhouse someday the earth would be like that too we have to expore and colonized other planet and survive our our very spicies dont need to ask this question watch the fate of the sun the soon it will destroy as all we have to act now..

THEY PUT A MAN ON THE MOON OVER 40 YEARS AGO & WE
STILL DON'T HAVE ANYONE EITHER LIVING THERE OR
EVEN MAKING REGULAR VISITS.I STILL THINK THAT
MAKING THESE INCONSISTANT VISITS IS JUST A WAY
TO COVER UP THAT THEY ARE ACTUALLY BUILDING NUCLEAR
WEAPONS & WASTING TAXPAYERS' MONEY, INSTEAD OF
TRYING TO FIND A SUBTITUTE FOR GASOLINE ENGINES
& REDUCE OIL COSTS OR THEY COULD BE PULLING OUR TROOPS & USING ONE OF THOSE WEAPONS THAT THEY
JUST MADE INSTEAD OF THEM COSTING US MORE AMERICAN
LIVES,BUT THEN AGAIN OUR PRESIDENT DOESN'T HAVE
THE BALLS TO DO THAT,PLUS HE'S A TEXAS OIL MAN!

Even without the side benefits we have gained from NASA research, just the inspiration we have gained from the exploration of our solar system and beyond is worth the cost. From the earliest Mercury missions, my mother kept us home from school to watch the launches. She believed that these events were more important than anything we could learn in school that day. As a result, I have been a space junkie all my life. If I had an opportunity to travel in space, I would go tomorrow. I am excited about the Phoenix, currently on Mars and what we can learn about the evolution of life in our solar system from it.
I will admit that NASA has had problems, but that is as much our fault as theirs. We started taking these missions for granted and forgot how uncertain each one can be, how much depends on making everything as perfect as possible before going forward. I don't believe we are ready to send a manned mission to Mars, but more robotic missions are crucial to paving the way.

LONG LIVE NASA!

LONG LIVE NASA!

Hmm, the qustion isn't clear. No I definately don't think NASA is a waste of money, and yes man should go to Mars, it should have happened 10 years ago!

Well, I THINK Deptment of Navy and Nasa should ADMIT that they already HAVE....
12 Phase Linear motors and Anti matter 115 thermo generators

Alright, I can't vote on a question that is not clearly asked. But any of you out there that think we should shut down NASA. I have a project for you. Go smash your computers, your CD/DVD players, blow up your cars, and just try living without the technology that you are using to complaing about NASA in the first place because most of it would have never existed without NASA. There are always risks with these endevour's and the people that go on them are well aware of that and are brave enough to take those chances. I personally admire everything NASA does and it would be a shame to see it come to an end!

We definitely need NASA! I don't think putting a man or woman on Mars should be a prime concern. Doing something just because "we can?" We know we can, the question is, SHOULD we? Do we need to?

I think we should be careful, and not rush into things, like putting a man on Mars. First we should make sure that everything is safe, in regards to space vehicles, and satellites. Then, with that put to rest, I think we should go ahead a put a man on Mars. We don't want another "Challenger," do we?

I work for NASA and we are MUCH more than "putting men on mars" NASA has helped out a lot in other areas with their vast technology, including natural disasters, the weather, the wildfires, and military computing, so definitely YES NASA is a necessity

Only the war is a real waste of money and people.

are they crazy no man can leave on mars they just waste tax that can be use at stae of calamity areas...

I am not an american citizen. But I think the space investigation, is a debt with the mankind for a country with the resources, technology and determination that the USA possesses.

For those who believe that the future is better discovered than just anticipated, invented than just imagined, the NASA is a symbol of what is possible as in our world and as universal citizens of earth. It is our responsibility to discover, dominate, populate, and most importantly lay a foundation for our children, the future generations to know their future and their universal environment. NASA is a living legacy to humanity.

Seems like a trick question...but we absolutely need NASA. With all the spinoff technologies we recieve from NASA's research, it would be stupid to reduce funding. Statistics say that for every dollar we spend on NASA, we recieve seven dollars in return through spinoff technologies and economic improvments.

Hi! NASA is doing great job in space exploration and other related scientific and technological researches. They are presenting planet earth in the vast universe, how can we stop that movment. Keep it up great work NASA. Thanks! Chittranjan (India)

Oh... Yes!!!?? Of course... WOW!!!???? We should just wait here for the next comet... Or a really, really big asteroid...???? Umh??? Duh? Why is this question even taken serious...???? Hey man!!!??? Upwarard we go...!!!?? Or... If we stay...?? Stagnent...???? And how boring!!??? We perish!!!!

HI NASA, I MAY BE FROM SOUTH SFRICA BUT A MAN ON MARS WILL BE THE NEXT BIG LEAP.

I want to see a living organisam on MARS,so that we are not alone in this universe.
Jahnavi[INDIA]

i want to see people like us in mars.all the best for the people who work on it.
vanitha INDIA

I want to see a man on mars and i hope there is alian lifeforms on mars or just other lifeforms on mars

If there's water, theres Life.

WE DEFITNETLY NEED NASA TO KEEP US UPDATED WITH EVERYTHING THAT IS GOING ON NOT ONLY IN EARTH BUT ALSO IN OUTER SPACE. IT WOULD BE ABSURD IF WE DONT TAKE NASA SERIOUSLY.
