Description:

Issue:

Speeding and Stop-Sign-Running in residential neighborhoods represent the single greatest complaints to police departments and city council representatives throughout the U.S. Most speeders and sign-runners on your street in live in your neighborhood. It is not unusual for speeders to be clocked in excess of 40 mph (and even 50 mph on occasion) in 25-mph zones. Speeding in residential neighborhoods especially threatens the safety of our children.  Stop-sign-running causes 200 pedestrian deaths and 17,000 injuries each year.

Belief:

We must unite our neighborhoods and communities throughout the U.S. with a consistent message about safe driving. Since we as drivers cause the problem of speeding in residential neighborhoods (and beyond), we must be actively engaged and committed to being the solution as well. Keep Kids Alive Drive 25® is a friendly reminder to slow down in a fast-paced world, as well as an invitation to take personal responsibility for our driving behavior.

I pledge to...

I pledge to buckle up every trip, every time. I further pledge to expect all passengers to buckle up as well. (Reminder, many injuries and deaths occur as a result of the "backseat bullet," the passenger who is not buckled and whose body flies around the cab crashing into others - usually family members and friends.) 25 is still TOO fast. If you post a sign saying 25 and the average person drives 5 MPH over you then have 30MPH. The risk of killing a pedestrian if hit jumps from 5% (if going 20MPH) to 45% (if going 30MPH). That is HUGE. I don't understand the 25MPH in neighborhoods.

I have contacted the authorities in my city, and the Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 rep in my area, and still no stop signs or safety measures have been taken. They came and researched that the average speed was 36 mph.!!! What else can I do? I am a mother of a toddler, and it frustrates me to see so many people speeding up and down our hill, just feet from our yard.

I lost my son Anthony on 8/6/07. An elderly man who was trying to beat the light and struck my son. I too have searched for something through my grief and found KKAD25. A friend of mine brought me a sign for my lawn and I contacted Tom Everson, Founder of this organization who is an amazing and caring man. Since then I have contacted our Congressman and County Executives to fight to lower the speed limit on the road. Our prayers have been answered and they agreed to lower the speed limit. I would not want to see another family go through the pain and agony we feel every day. I needed to do this and with the help and support of Tom, I could not have accomplished this. I thank God for this man every day and for his strength to continue this organization. We need to be heard. Too many young children's lives are shortened because of carelessness. Please help in any way you can and save a life.

I was involved in an auto accident June 1993 at the tender age of 15. Speeding and riding in the back of a truck without proper restrant on all (12) young adults, the driver lost control! We rolled many times till coming to a rest. I had been thrown from the truck, my jaw was broken and had a cracked skull. I lost my best friend to this accident....Please help us be safe for each other and our children!!!
Yesterday, a speeder hit and ran, my husbands van this is the third time. And my cat was run over, 800 dollers later, NO one stoped to let us know what they had done... Now I'm done.

I am a law abiding, however I had recently had to go thru a stop sign. The vehical behind me was travling to fast, and didnt appear that they was going to stop.
I have a saying (slow down and you will get there faster)

Itis great to hear all of your suggestions. Whatever it is that we do to get the message out is positive. On May 5th of 2006 my son Shaye Patrick Martin was walking the 2 blocks to school when he was struck and killed by a speeding motorist who lost control of her car. I spent night after night in a daze or fog. I sat up nights not being able to sleep. I would get online and start looking. Looking for something. I did not even know what that somethng was. Then I came across Keep Kids Alive, Drive 25. This was what I was looking for the whole time. I since have been very active on this site and have been too several Youth Task Meeting here in our town of Miami Lakes, Florida. I have had meetings with council members and just last night my petition to lower all residential neighborhood speed limits to 25 was put in front of the Town Council and the motion was seconded. Baby Steps people. I am on the way. We are on the way.
Thank You Tom for everything that you do!!!

Please everyone take time to slow down my 2 and a half little girl anna lee was hit and killed right infront of me in front of our home. It is so important not to speed and be aware of your surrondings. We have our keep kids alive sign in our yard and that's were it will stay untill people start getting the message not to speed through residential areas. Erika Diffenderfer

the driver wasn't speeding. why was your 2-year-old away far enough away from you that she was able to walk into a busy street?
Alana P. - I believe that you have missed the point of what people are trying to say on this website. I know that I am not the only one who will notice that you wrote the only negative comment. You have some nerve picking on a mother who lost her little girl and was only trying to make a comment about people speeding on the road. Trying to have something positive come out of something horrible by asking people to slow down so that no other mother has to go through what she did. How dare you say that he wasn't speeding. The coronor and the state police feel differently. Also, let's not forget about Anna Lee a 2 1/2 year old the little girl who lost her life that day. I hope that you live your life to perfection and that no accident ever befalls you or yours. Accidents happen every day, but if people take the time to slow down, do the speed limit and look around at their surroundings maybe one less accident will occur. Maybe that is all she was trying to say. Shame on you.

I think this is a great thing. People drive way too fast in neighborhoods, ( including my very own) I am sure there are many children killed, and it is just not reported in the newspaper. How sad! We need to SLOW DOWN!
I also know the pain of losing a child ( though my son died due to another dangerous driving issue.) My very good friend lost her son while he was on his bike due to a reckless, speeing young man you had no care for anyone at all and killed her son. I know how badly her heart hurts. Lets try to save another family this pain, and save lives.
SLOW DOWN!

My name is Russell Hurd and I live in Maryland. My daughter Heather was killed in a crash on January 3, 2008 by a tractor trailer driver who was allegedly texting when the crash occurred. Since then we have been fighting for Heathers Law , a comprehensive ban on hand held cell phones and texting while driving not only in Maryland but across the nation as well. Please help us by signing our petition online at www.4heather.com

Lets make Heathers Law a reality

I hope others will join in on another campaign like this.

how about taking a month and ask people to car pool or take public transportation.

Well, several things came up on the 25th and I drove more than ever moving kids around from swimming to jobs. Next time we should do a week and ask members to take on day in the week.

How do I obtain a Drive 25 yard sign?

Laura Pascau

We have 2 day's left. how are you goint to spend the day. I will be riding my bike to the office.

We already have a Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 sign on our yard but as Leader of a Girl Scouts Troop - we're planning a sign planting event THANKS to our local City Council Member who supplied us with the signs.
