Description:

To the United States Congress: We, the undersigned, support the Official Language Unity Act of 2007. According to Steve King who introduced this legislation (HR 997), "The English language is the carrier of liberty and freedom throughout history and the world. For centuries, our common tongue - English - has been the uniting force in this great nation, knocking down ethnic and cultural barriers to make us truly one nation. Today, as we rally for unity and patriotism, a common means of communication propels us towards our goal." Studies show that those who know English get better jobs, earn more money, and are less likely to be uninsured. As a result, English decreases government dependency. Regardless of race, gender, or citizenship status, Americans have declared their support for an official language. A Rasmussen poll conducted in June found that eighty-five percent of Americans favor making English the official language. Most European immigrants learn English as quickly as possible, because they know that is the way to the American dream. Everyone else should do the same!

If you choose to live here then you need to speak the language

Joe Jonas Lover NO!!! U SHOULD SPEAK WHATEVER YOU WANT!!! THIS IS FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!!! DUH

Why did so many Congressman vote this down?  And look at those running for President that votes against this.  Where is their loyalty?  To the U.S.A as we know it, or to Mexico and the thought of all those votes?  We need to be united in something or as the old saying goes, divided we fall.  Speak English.  Why do we need to print everything in English and Spanish?  Why do I need to press one for English.  All immigrents before needed to learn English.  So should those today, as of course those coming in from any non-spanish speaking country do.  English as our National Language is needed.

Making it the official language wouldn't really help make more people understand said language. Not everyone in Japan speaks Japanese. Not everyone in Russia speaks Russia. No matter where you go, there will always be a mix in languages. So in the end, it doesn't really matter what we say the official language is, the result will be the same.

If we need to print everything in English and Spanish, need to have customer service personnel that speak English and Spanish,( note lawsuit against Salvation Army Thift stores), that creates a lot more expense for corporations, for our government and will increase our taxes.  They can speak whatever language they want in their homes, with their friends and family, but for official business, speak English.

I definitely agree.  Why can people that can't speak English take classes for free and if we want to study another language, it costs.  That's definitely not right.
