Description:

Tomorrow marks the death of a great web browser.  After February 1st 2008 there will no longer be any development or patching of the Netscape World Wide Web browsing application.  Netscape has been in trouble for a pretty long time.  Most people use Firefox or Internet Explorer now.  But Netscape will always hold a special place in my heart.  So if you have ever used Netscape, and once upon a time thought it was cool, please observe a moment of silence tomorrow to reflect on years past.  Even if it is only between mouse clicks … remember that there was once a great green browser that navigated us to the stars and back.  The battle is over for you Netscape, may you rest in peace while sailing the heavens.

Yes, it doesn't seem fair somehow, Netscape brought the WWW to life and made a system everyone could use without reading a thick manual.

Netscape was killed by Microsoft long before AOL bought it. It's hard to sustain innovation when a monopolistic behemoth like MSFT cuts your revenue model out from under you by giving away software. Why was it again they did this? They gave away the IE browser but they don't give away Office or OS software. Why is that? Anyway, yes, too bad about Netscape but this of course was "baked in the cake" a long time ago.

Goodbye Netscape. Though you won't be missed by many after AOL purchased you and drove the product into the ground. There was lots of innovation in the pre 4+ Netscape browsers which is still used in today's modern browsers.
