Issue:
[T]he Freedom From Religion Foundation, represented by Dr. Michael Newdow, has launched a massive lawsuit - suing Congress itself, in federal court - to remove the words ''under God'' from the Pledge of Allegiance. Should this lawsuit succeed, this case could set the precedent for banning the name of God - erasing His name from any public mention - especially in the public schools. Sekulow, Jay, January 15, 2008. Pledge of Allegiance Under Fire. American Center for Law and Justice
Should our Pledge of Allegiance be altered to accomodate those who do not wish to say "under God"?
Belief:
I absolutely 100% support freedom of speech, religion, choice, and thought. However, when organizations come up, like FFRF, that try to remove freedom from others, I become baffled. Isn't what they are fighting for a contradiction to themselves and their organization?? Practicing your freedom by removing someone else's freedom seems like a silly thing to do. According to the FFRF website, "… the first to speak out … have been freethinkers..." If this organization were truly practicing freedom of thought, wouldn't they allow others to do the same? Not allowing people to practice what they will is being narrow minded, to say the least.
I believe in the freedom of all things religion included. Personally I just don't say under god when we say the pledge at my school. I do personally believe we should take it out. If you know your history you'll know that the original pledge did not have under god in it. It was only later that it was changed.
I agree that there are way to many lurkers and not enough doers in this world anymore....We speak to poeple as though we are not even able to say something good. Our freedom has become morbidly quiet due to our government and small terrorist groups that want us to be quiet..... Guess what we have done just that. We need to fight back wiht the good book that GOD GAVE US TO READ AND LEARN BY:
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
(Psalm 1:1,2)
Be wise now, therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
(Psalm 2:10-12)
Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.
(Psalm 33:12)
For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the Lord made the heavens
(Psalm 96:5)
Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help. His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.
(Psalm 146:3,4)
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
(Isaiah 9:6,7)
So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.
(Isaiah 52:15)
Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
(Hebrews 11:33,34)
Read since there are so many promises that we are missing......
yes, we MUST MUST MUST leave it as it is. I understand america is generally a loving union, and that more and more we lean towards assuring we are "loving all religions, faiths, denominations," working hard so as not to make any feel ignored or offended, but we HAVE to keep in mind that this nation was founded my men who were deeply in love with the word of God and the principles that Jesus spoke of. If we do not like it, should we honestly abandon it all? Our founding fathers created America BECAUSE it was unlike other nations that were hedonistic and socialist, but although America is founded on the love of the God of mercy, our founding fathers also still made allowance for the respect of any and all other beliefs -- however, it is they who did all that they did BECAUSE they had seen with their eyes and felt with their hearts the love that comes with knowing the God they speak of so highly and consistently in all that they did. They made their laws based on the good of a nation and that which does us all good--a good measure of care, love and guidance! It is what our children crave and thrive by receiving, and so should we as a nation! We must embrace the laws that our fathers wrote of, for they are written as a parent would write for the love of their child -- to keep them from harm. but we instead have chosen to rebel in sorts over the years, deciding that their laws are no fun, so let's bend one here and there so as to meet our own needs and desires, but we've now manipulated it to where everything must be changed to where it is politically "correct" or nothing at all. we are killing ourselves, though, slowly but sure. Oh how God loves us and wants nothing more than for us to see and feel it, and remember that it is from his original loving arms that we were made. but that as time went on, we became more lost in ourselves, and rules had to be set, and so he did, but for our good, not HARM! Would we really let our kids run amuck? Rightfully, NO, but unfortunately, we are all getting so side-tracked and desensitized, that we are losing site of what is right and wrong any more. I understand as America we love to love and make sure all feel welcome, and that is WONDERFUL, God is indeed the lover of such principles, but we must also remember to understand how the trickle effect quickly and deeply turns into a mountain--i understand young girls who are pregnant and in dire need of an answer may feel their right to an abortion is necessary, but, please, friends, we truly do open doors and avenues to more pushed boundaries as time goes on -- for it is shown that it is what we have already done, and we do indeed have a suffering sub-culture now -- teens and young adults and the like. oh how god loves us. we hate his rules because rules mean "minding" but we yet we have also forgotten how good it feels to be loved and know that we are cared for, and that being cared for means some rules will be handed down so as to keep us safe. Oh please let us get back to remembering this I pray. In God's love and merciful name - His daughter
"Under God" was added in the 1950's and is not apart of the original pledge of allegiance... in fact it was added by the facsist McCarthey. If you look at books of school children before then... It isn't there. It should be removed and the Pledge put back into it's original from that our fore fathers wrote.
you know one of the things told from the book of revelations is the outlaw of all religion by the government & the more i read & hear the more i believe in the bible are we finally reaching our peak.ps also isnt 'in god we trust' written on all american currency.
theres no proof that god is real, no hard proof. every one wants to back their proof on the bible but the bible has faults. i think god should be taken out b/c this nation isnt one nation under god(christian) its one nation under many beliefs. so they need to stop saying one nation under one god
God not real? Look around at all the wonderful things He gave you.
Just as the old saying goes, there are no atheists in foxholes. Anyone who says he doesn't believe in God will change his tune when he is in dire straights. Surely it is easy enough to trounce on God while you think you are in safety, but let that safety be threatened, and you, like the Israelites of old time, will suddenly want his help. Personally, I know God is real. He has rescued me so many times I could never count them. Should we be a nation that is under God? Only if we want to continue being a nation.
Actually I did know some atheists in foxholes and they didn't call out to your god in dire straights... stupid saying!
wow. really. you were in a war.
try war. you watch the documentaries of soldiers. most of the time youll hear. "and i never seen my buddy so scared. and he never really was a religious man but once that mortar round exploded near by flipping him off the ground. he prayed and it was a prayer like i never heard before. that son of a ***** prayed like satan himself was pulling at his soul"
thats a small tid bit from actual documentary.
i am 14 years old.
Personally, i dont believe in god.
&& as for what happens when we die, i'll find out when i get there...or where ever.
But, i simply think that people should say it if they want to or, if they dont want to then dont.
You cant &&shouldnt be forced to
You know ozzzy?
guess what.
he was into witchcraft which deals with demonic powers. he got a book from one of his bandmates and that very night he seen shapes and dark figures moving about clawing on the walls.
im getting chills just talking about that.
Miranda,
Unfortunately, it will be too late once you die. You need to make a decision now about eternity. There is a heaven and a hell. I know this because when I was forteen (I am now 34), I decided to test the theory of demonic forces and found myself somewhere I did not want to be. I know they exist because I experienced their prescence in my life. The things I witnessed scared the hell out of me. I am now a Christian and have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. I know I am going to heaven now because I have accepted Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior. I now experience the prescence of the Holy Spirit; and it is an undescribable feeling. I praise God everyday for my knowledge of Him. Check out this video:

So if you don't want to say "under God" you don't have to but the option should be there for those that want it. Please stop infringing on my rights to say it. Thank you.
i do know this. if they ever get rid of it. ill get on a loud speaker and yell in the pledge, "UNDER GOD"
so all can hear. they cant get rid of god as long as a few of us fight for whats right. i try to sound like its noon-ciolent but i dont mind going on a "holy war" for this and other terms of removal of god. i wont allow it. many people wont agree with the means by which i would acccomplish this but thats becuase they know that would plunge into another possible civil war.
Joe Jonas Lover IF THIS WHOLE NATION WAS UNDER GOD, THEIR WOULDN'T BE ANY SCUM BAGS ANYWHERE!!! THIS WHOLE WORLD SHOULD BE LIVING TOGETHER, BUT NO, YOU ARE ALL STUCK IN THE OLD WAYS OF SORTING PEOPLE, YOU SONS OF GUNS!!!!
God gave us free will, the choice to do what is right or wrong. The scum bags of the world made their choice.
Someone please look at the map and take a look at the name of our Country. It says United States of America. Now look up the history of our country and the principles it was founded on. The pilgrims ventured across the ocean risking their lives for the freedom to practice Christianity. William Bradford himself wrote "Having undertaken, for the Glory of God and advancement of the Christian Faith and Honour of our King and Country, a Voyage to plant the First Colony in the Northern Parts of Virginia, do by these presents solemnly and mutually in the presence of God and one of another, Covenant and Combine ourselves together into a Civil Body Politic" This was written in the Mayflower Compact of 1620. This was the first form of Government in our nation. So saying we should remove God from the Pledge of allegiance is absurd and means we shouldn't teach American History in school because everything in our Government is based off of Christian beliefs, meaning we shall honor God as our leader, that he would protect us and lead us in the right direction. To remove God from public view would mean all the soldiers that died for us and all of the leaders who gave up house and home would have died in vain. Is that what you people who do not want God in the public eye want? You are insulting all of our ancestors when you say that. You can not say remove God from the public and still call yourself an American Patriot, because America my friends, was founded on Christian beliefs and who are you to say change it. I wish you could tell that to George Washington cause he would have had you killed for treason. Think about it before you become individualistic and think we should change our entire nations heritage just because you don't believe.
Pilgrims were the LAST to show up on the American shores and did NOT believe in Freedom of Religion... you worshiped as they wanted or they killed you. They kidnapped Native children and held them for ransom for food from their families than sent them home in blankets infected with the Small Pox disease! Not Good People at all... Stop using them as examples.
By the way... I AM the direct descendant of John Adams and my Family was in this country LONG before the pilgrims, and George Washington was actually an athiest!
what does you bein a descendant of john adams have anything to do with this. he was a great man.
and your family was in this country long before the pilgrims... highly doubt it. but hey. what do i know.i only study history with apassion. mostly wars and american history. i actually have a book that is from the founding of america to the collapse of soviet union.
Oh, so many common misconceptions and mutilation of the truth. Fundamentalists like to use the Mayflower Compact to prove their point...and the absolutely love the Pilgrams. Problem is, those weren't the only people to settle this great land. Virginia was founded as a merchantile colony. It was desgined to make money for England, not as a place of religious refugee. You can't pick and choose who you want to represent the foundation of this country. You can't single out the Pilgrams and the Mayflower Compact, and completely ignore the House of Burgesses, the establishment of Georgia (a buffer state, a place where England threw undiserables, and a place to keep the Carolinas - which were full of plantations, used for making money; not religion - safe from Spanish attack. What about Rhode Island - a refugee for Jews. And New York - originally a Dutch harbor principally established for, you guessed it, making money. But when you think about it, it does make sense. Modern fundamentalists spend more time worshipping Mammon than they do actually following the scriptures of Jesus.
I was raised Catholic, though I'm not really religious, perhaps more spiritual, but I don't see why people get so touchy about using the term "God" anywhere and have to agree with Tiffany B. Also, the term "God" does not *have to* equate to just one religion (specifically the Christian "God"). All monotheistic religions could equate "God" to there supreme diety. Even polythistic ones can equate "God" to the lead god (or godesses) of the panthon.
If people could wrap there little minds around this and similar issues and would not get hyper-offended about the littlest things then we wouldn't have to deal with trivial crap like this. What ever happened to learning to *compromise* with each other (and no asking people to give something up/get rid of something continually and allowing them to meet you half way is *not* compromising ... that's just trying to chip away at other's freedoms).
For the record, I personally don't count Athesism as a "religion" but as a "generic belief/philosophical ideal" instead. If you don't believe in any higher power(s)/force(s), you can't "worship" anything (which is pretty much what one tends to do when one practices a religion). If you don't believe the same as someone else, don't be dictating to them what they should/should not do based solely on religious beliefs (or lack thereof) (one's "religion" may dictate otherwise, but at lease in secular environment it would be civil to do otherwise).
.... hopefully I haven't fed any trolls with this post
you know why they assume its the christian god.
becuase they know deep down that it is.
I'm not Christian but I've been saying the pledge even before I started going to school. It's ridiculous that people even have the nerve to say that "under God" doesn't belong in the pledge. I guess my problem is the people who are fighting to keep it in the pledge for all of the wrong reasons. If God gave a **** about the pledge then let him come down to us and tell us. All of these Christians who throw a fit because some people don't agree with it, need to shut up!
It's disrespectful enough when people don't stand for the pledge or when people don't even say the pledge. I don't think any one really cares about it anymore...However, the few of us who actually take pride in our country will be fine with the way the pledge is now.
I mean seriously..It's just like people fighting over the moment of silence right after the pledge because they want to pray...
I AGREE WITH MIKE M. PEOPLE READ YOUR BIBLE'S. YOU DON'T GET A 2ND CHANCE. WITH OUT GOD, YOU ARE NOTHING. HE IS OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN. IF WE AS HIS CHILDREN TURN AWAY FROM HIM, HE WILL TURN AWAY FROM US. WE ARE ONE NATION, UNDER GOD! AND AS FOR THE PERSON THAT SAID US CHRISTIANS NEED TO GET OVER IT. YOU NEED ALOT OF SOUL SEARCHING. I WILL BE DINING AT THE TABLE WITH MY FATHER. HOW ABOUT YOU? CHRIS M. YOU ARE IN FOR A RUDE AWAKING. AS A CHRISTIAN WE ARE TO PRAY FOR THE LOST AND YOU ARE DEFFENTLY LOST! I WAS WERE YOU ARE NOW AND MY EYES HAVE BEEN OPENED. IF IT WHERE NOT FOR GOD, YOU, ME, THE SKY, THE MOUNTAINS, TREES PEOPLE AND FREEDOM OF CHOICE WOULD NOT BE HERE. I'M NOT TELLING YOU HOW TO BELIEVE BUT THAT IS WHY IT IS CALLED FAITH. IF YOU DO NOT STAND FOR SOMETHING, YOU WILL FALL FOR ANYTHING. AND YOU ARE FALLING FOR ANYTHING. WE AS AMERICANS HAVE THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH. WE HAVE THE FREEDOM OF RELIGION, WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS, WE HAVE ALOT OF FREEDOMS AND ALOT OF OPINIONS.THAT IS WHY WE ARE A FREE NATION. BUT IF WE TAKE GOD OUT OF EVERYTHING. WHAT DO WE THEN STAND FOR? NOTHING. ALL WE ARE LEFT WITH IS OUR OPINIONS, OUR RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS, WE WILL THEN LOSE OUR FREEDOM OF OUR OPINION, LOOK AT ALL THE NATIONS THAT ARE AT WAR, LOOK AT IRAC. READ THE BIBLE AND IT IS ALL IN THERE. WETHER MIKE M. WANTS TO BELIVE IT OR NOT. ALL THE SIGNS OF WHAT HAS BEEN AND WHAT WILL BE IS IN THE ONLY TRUE BOOK. BUT ALOT OF PEOPLE ARE TO AFRAID TO ADMIT THAT THEY ARE WRONG AND THAT THEY WANT TO MAKE THEIR OPINION COUNT. EVERYONE HAS AN OPINION. BUT THE ONLY TRUTH IS WRITTEN IN THE GOOD BOOK AND IF YOU DO NOT SEE IT FOR WHAT IT IS THEN YOU ARE SADLY MISTAKEN. MIKE M IF YOU WANT TO RESEARCH SOMETHING. RESEARCH IRAC AND THE NEIGHBORING CITIES. YOU WILL SEE JUST WERE WE ALL STAND TODAY. WHEN THE RAPTURE HAPPENS AND IT WILL. YOU ALL BETTER BE PREPAIRED, OR YOU WILL SPEND THE REST OF ETERNITY IN HELL. REVELATIONS. READ IT, IF IT DOES NOT MAKE YOU THINK THAT MY "GOD" DID NOT GIVE YOU A BRAIN.
are we supposed to take you seriously when you cannot even correctly spell "IRAQ".
and typing in all caps does not make your arguement any more relevant or impressive.
