Description:

We believe cyclists, vehicle operators, transportation engineers and elected officials should work together to make roadways safe, reliable, and maintained for all users; We believe organized bicycle rides should not be denied access to Iowa’s roadways by local government; We believe cyclists are entitled to equal protection and their access to the judicial system should not be uniformly denied; We believe government should address the real killer of bicyclists: irresponsible, distracted motorized drivers.

Be it further resolved, that we support additional transportation safety education and awareness; We support additional encouragement of bicycling across Iowa; We support additional investments in shared road designs and maintenance; We support additional funding for separated trails.

Forum Discussion for Oppose Blanket Immunity for Bicycling in Iowa

They have done a dozen things in cities to make bicyling more safe from tire friendly drain covers to more pathways to wider left hand lanes to give bicyclists room. Surely they can do the same for highways? Just making the shoulders all paved and three feet wider would create a place for cyclists on the highway without being in the middle of traffic where someone might be going 120 k without paying attention.

Isn't bicycle tourism a big industry in Europe? Wouldn't Iowa with all it's beautiful scenery big sky country and open countryside be a good industry for Iowa as well? Iowa may be missing an opportunity by it's anti-bicycle attitude? What do long range bicyclists think about this? (I can't ride a bicycle because of an injury).
