I'm curious who brought this topic up? Sears has always been a civic-minded patriotic corporation that treats their employees who serve in the military better than most other companies. I commend them for the steps they're taking, including paying their active troops' insurance and lost wages for up to two years, but I never expected less of them. Since I was a kid we always had The Sears & Roebuck catalog around the house and I remember Sears would always sponsor little league teams and Boy Scout troops in the area. I'm sure we all agree that they were simpler times back then, and companies didn't seem so greedy. Stores used to get involved in their neighborhoods, usually by giving money or their employees would volunteer for whatever was going on, be it a paper drive or park clean up. Sear's patriotic attitude to this country and its people is one of the reasons that I will always be one of their supporters and customers. Their attitude toward this country and their responsibilities in it may have grown from the ethics that Robert E. Wood brought to the company when he came to Sears from Montgomery Ward in 1925. Mr Wood was the leader that took Sears from a mail order catalog company to the retail giant they are today. Wood, himself a retired Brigadier General who was a great businessman as well as a patriot and philanthropist. In addition to his business and civic activities he also served as an advisor to many government departments, even serving on some early Hoover Commissions on National Security and even served on one committee working to reorganize the Executive branch. Mr Wood was a visionary who unlike the business tycoons of today, really felt it was necessary to give something back. Somehow they are able to keep their prices competitive with other vendors without taking advantage of their employees, or taking advantage of the poor people, especially children in third world countries to maintain huge profits the way businesses like Walmart do. I don't work for Sears nor am I related to Robert Wood, I'm just a historian and I know that this country needs more stores and corporations like Sears, and we also need more great men like Robert E. Wood; Without them we are doomed as a country. And while I'm at it let me give praise to the brave men and women serving their country in the Armed forces. Let's hope they all come back safely so they can go back to their jobs at Sears. Submitted by Lynn F. on Tue, 12/04/2007 - 00:59
Sears I applaude you for your support of our troops. Therefore I will be more than happy to shop at Sears. Wish other large companies would do the same. Submitted by Anna W. on Fri, 11/30/2007 - 07:21
My husband is overseas right now and doesn't work with sears. He shops there on occasion for our sons clothes and things but that was all. We had to stop shopping because when he told his employer his ship date, he got fired. He wasn't leaving for another two months. All finsncial burdens fell to me. Any company that will support our troops so gallantly should be rewarded. So needless to say, this is where I will be buying clothes and things for the home. My son is in Iraq with the US Army Chemical Platoon, he is not employed nor does he have any affiliation with Sears. However in their own way they are supporting him. I think more companies need to follow the example set by Sears. Sears has been in our lives forever, I remember gonig shopping for school clothes with my sister at the old store. I also remember going to sit on Santas lap in the Sears store. I loved it then, and I love it even more now. God Bless American Soldiers, and God Bless Sears! Absolutely, I will support and will encourage all family and friends to do the same.Way to Go Sears!!! Submitted by Kane B. on Mon, 11/26/2007 - 20:53
I read that Sears dontated $2 million to the National Military Family Association for military family programs. They seem to be recognizing our military men and women in a big way. That task of keeping a postiion open for long periods of time is diffuclut and should be recognized! I will buy at least one thing this month. Submitted by John D. on Mon, 12/31/2007 - 03:22
I'll vouch for that. We had to hold a position open for someone who took a one year sabatical. Not military related or anything but it was still the same. We couldn't hire anyone to fill the position so the rest of us had pick up the extra work and hours. The company also has to continue to pay for insurance for the missing employee while they are gone. Yeah Sears, Yeah Sears' guardsmen, and hip, hip, hooray for the Sears employees that are staying behind picking up the slack! Loading People... |
