Should College Athletes Get Paid?Forum Discussion for Should College Athletes Get Paid? Submitted by Todd B. on Wed, 03/12/2008 - 03:41
Money is reserved for the professional athletes. College athletes should play for the love of the game! Submitted by Kathy L. on Tue, 02/05/2008 - 02:09
The players get paid, maybe not in cash or cars(anymore), but they get paid. I am a senior at a university known for sports and have been in class many times with athletes. I have seen them playing with their gameboys, and texting and even taking phone calls during class and the professor not say a word,I have seen athletes miss assignments, quizzes and tests with no problem, I have seen people from the coaching staff walk into a lecture hall and remove the athletes in the middle of class, not to mention they stroll into class late whenever, and most everyday. It did not bother me my first few semesters, but now, I just roll my eyes at the entire thing. I know they are working hard at their sport, I know this. I know they could get hurt, and their careers would be over, I also know that when they hit the pros they will possibly make more money than all the students in our Masters program put together could hope for. So, yeah they get paid, don't think they don't. Do I sound jealous? heck yeah I do. I work hard, a lot of them do not, and don't have to. But I am a female that does not tackle, dribble or spit. Don't pay the players there in college not for hire to play as NFL players. There in school MAN... Submitted by Jason C. on Thu, 12/13/2007 - 07:24
I don't really like either answer, but I'd rather they take some of the money out. I know at my college at least, players were being bought homes, furnishings, vehicles, and other expensive items. It was often during the recruiting phase, but the stars were pampered continuously. With the scholarship and amenities they recieved, they were getting paid. It may not have been the millions they weren't seeing that were going to the school and staff, but I think any 19 or 20 year old that owns a home in an upscale neighborhood while attending school on scholarship is doing pretty well. To tell the truth I'm not sure what the best answer is. I feel the best thing to do is to take the money out of the game. The first and foremoste goal of the students is to get an education and football should be a side-line, not preperation for the big leagues. Baseball has a farm system for that reason and that is why students on baseball scholarships end up graduating at a much higher rate than football scholarships.
I'm not sure it is possible to take the money out, that being the case, then players would play for money instead of education. On the otherhand you have a point, they make it, then they should get paid.
An interesting dilemma, it will be interesting to see what University students say about itl Submitted by Mary Beth D. on Tue, 12/11/2007 - 00:03
College football seems to be the biggest offender. Why don't they have a farm system like baseball and hockey? Loading People... |
