Ok I have to issue a disclaimer right now. This is probably the nerdiest campaign I have ever created but I think it is important. I was first made aware of this issue while watching the movie Clerks II. In the film the characters get into a heated argument about the supremacy of either Lord of The Rings or Star Wars. Choosing both is not an option!
Belief:
Star Wars a New Hope, originally titled Star Wars was released on May 25th 1977. Since then the saga was completed by two sequels and 3 prequels detailing the lives of Anakin Skwalker, and later, in Star Wars time, his son Luke Skywalker. This movie started a movement that still lives on today. So prevalent is this pop culture icon in our society that a recent religion pole taken in England yielded a very high percentage of the answer Jedi. Next to the main story of coming of age and the duality of man you have two love stories, multiple star battles, and an overwhelmingly striking social commentary.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was released December 19, 2001. This highly anticipated adaptation of the work of J.R.R. Tolkien brought the stories, which many around the world had grown up reading, to life on the silver screen. In this saga Frodo Baggins must transport a powerful ring to the fiery, hell like, pit from whence it was created. The problem is that the ring is evil and it can take power over people and he has to take it a long distance through many obstacles while the main evil of Middle Earth is trying to bring about a, kind of, apocalypse with these demon type things called Orks. You also have a disenfranchised king, tons of elves (the big kind not like Christmas), a spunky dwarf and a wizard that bears an uncanny resemblance to magneto. They of course also have epic battles.
So here is the simple vote. Once and for all, in your heart of hearts, which to you prefer?
special effects do not count to make a good film or book in its contents. For those who like Star Wars (like me): Have you heard about a Maia, about Varda, Manwë or Morgoth, about Balrogs, about Hobbits, about Nazgûl, about a Silmaril? and there aren't stupid common elves, and there are no goblins!!
For those tho like Lord of the Rings (like me): Have you heard about ysalamiri, about vornskrs, about a Bantha, about a Hutt, about Stratts, about an Acklay or Tusken?
And one last thing, is not an argument between two movies, is an argument between a movie and a BOOK written by just ONE original and professional writer. And if Lucas and Tolkien met, I'm sure the would say "This is our legacy: a fight between two stupid bands whot try to deicde the most stupid and irrelevant thing on Earth." And we can't decide what's better: LOTR and SW are too SO different things!!!
Yeah but I mean come on. The light sabers and spaceships are pretty friggen cool.
i think our good friend randle from clerks hits the nail right on the head in clerks II. enough said. star wars
I must say that even if I've seen bought of the movies, I can't say that one of them is better without a long time of thinking and I'm still not sure I did make the right choose. But if you first of all takes a look at Star Wars is episod I II and III way much better made than the other ones and it's true that lotr maybe is better made then all of the Star Wars. But the contents is better in Star Wars Special episod I II and III and still I'm totaly stuck in lotr. I love bought of the movies and if I first takes a look at lotr I say "This is the best movie I ever seen and then I takes a look at Star Wars and Says the same thing, but right now, I have to say that Star Wars is WAY better then lord of the Ring. (Even if Lotr rocks Star Wars episod I II and III is kind of better)(Especialy episod III even if I don't like the end.)
Although they are both awesome movies and alternate movie series, Star Wars is, with no doubt in my mind, better then LOTR.
Ok the get battle of sword vs light sword. Lets look at the facts. The lord of the rings trilogy grosed a total of 17 oscars and 247 other award wins. The Star wars trilogy and that would be 4-6 grosed a total of 7 oscars and 50 other award wins. Now your going to say things were differnet 31 years ago and that movies have more to work with now adays, but only in visual effects. Everythings else is the same for original score to Best Art Direction-Set Decoration which Star Wars IV and the Return of the king both won. So their is the facts, you be the judge. As for me its LORD OF THE RINGS ALL THE WAY, I personally think lotr is just better in every category and im not alone in that opinion. All data was form IMDB. Thank you
Yeah the only problem with that is that the academy hates George Lucas because he ran ran the credits at the end of the movies instead of the beginning and he didn't pay the actors well enough on Empire.
The Jedi Masters Rule!! NO Orks or any creature is POWERFUL enough to stop a Jedi..
My friend if you haved seen the fellowship of the ring, when GANDALF engaged "BALROG" u can see that no jedi no another magical power can stop him.
If you see the true Luke Skywalker, the Grand Master of the New Jedi Order, in his true form and he really has reason to fight, wizards don't have a chance.
lotr rules! its the best film of all time and forever! the books and films are a masterpiece!!! there totally awsome!
Lotr!! x ever..the books rocks!
lotr!
Star Wars 500%! I can't believe LOTR has more votes. LOTR wouldn't have even been possible if the original star wars hadn't been made. Due to Lucas, todays special effects are avaideble. Peter Jackson ADMITS he based some of his work on Star Wars! Star Wars as films are no doubt more classic and diserve to be remembered more. Just look at IMDB's top 250. Star Wars IV and V are both higher than the LOTR. Nuff said!!!
Lord of the Rings (includes Hobbit and Silmarillion) : 1937-1977. Star Wars: 1977-2005 and it still goes on, what it is cool because i love SW... You can't say LOTR has some of its work based on SW!
Obiwan would slice and dice Saloman, spelling wrong I am sure, like a freakin mango in a blender. Young or old, wouldn't matter.
LOTR is THE movie of all time. The only thing Star Wars has going for it is that it was made at a time when our standards from the movies (technically that is) were so low. But story-wise LOTR wins hands down.
When the first part of LOTR came out i knew that Star Wars had been dethroned. Lord of the rings is beyond comparison, nothing like it has ever benn or ever will be made. ( actually there is one series of books - The Foundation by I. Asimov that could make an epic like LOTR). To sum it up: LOTR and Jackson win hands down.
Lord of the Rings is the hands down winner even if Luke had both of his.
its a tough one this! ok took me ages to decide (my mum thinks im crazy she hates both) but... Star Wars!
Lord of the Rings all the way! I've seen both, but I have to give it to LOTR!!! aka Best Movie Ever! :)
this was the hardest vote i ever made in my life but i have to give it to star wars.
I like lord of the rings to people but to say that it is better than Star Wars is a joke
Star Wars isn't based on a book. It came from George Lucas's imagination. So the movie is , in fact, more original. If we talk about the special effects, well, the originial trilogy of SW is much older than LOTR. You cant compare. But I think LOTR is a very good movie, anyway.

just to let you know star wars came out in 1977. lord of the rings part one was written between 1937 to 1946. so i think your a bit foolish not getting your facts straight!
The movie may be based on a book, however Toilken came up with every aspect of Middle Earth etc out his imagination. Very original. It is said he made it for his children as bed time stories! Come on, that is originality at its finest!
But then some elements of it were borrowed from other bedtime stories like the dwarves. But then Tolkien made it into a different story entirely and at least to some extent became a basis for some games like Warcraft III. However, Star Wars was completely original. Other elements may seem similar but never completely the same. And although the Force part of Star Wars is hard to realize, the technology part can be realized. In fact, Star Wars is the inspiration of most research today in technology. Star Wars is the best!!!
Lord Of The Rings is just amazing,it is the biggest movies in movie history. You can't compare it to anything, where they speak all kinds of made up languages, and have the most incredable landscape.Everything is perfect, the epic battle scences have perfect detail, the costumes are amazing, everything is just so magnificent. And i mean you have to admit that Samwise,Legolas, and Aragorn are pretty hot.It is just an over all fantastic trilogy,(even though Frodo does get somewhat anoying in the second and third movies)So there you have it that is my choice Lord Of The Rings.I personally think that Star Wars is boring.
to compare them as movies alone is unfair and unrealistic!a new hope was released in 1977,cgi didnt exist!LOTR was unfilmable until 2003.i love them both, but to compare a movie 26 years old to a movie that rewrote special effects without mentioning that is crazy!!!
First of all, I don't think it would be fair to either franchise to compare a trilogy (LOTR) with a saga (SW). However, if I exclude my vote to a comparison between the original Star Wars trilogy and the LOTR trilogy, I would be tempted to pick the original Star Wars trilogy (from a purely cinematic perspective - we can't get into the literary aspects of either here), simply because it trumps the LOTR films in many categories... influence, omnipresence, innovation, broad appeal, forward-thinking, pop-culture importance, etc. Granted, pretty much all of these characteristics are simply due to the fact that they came before LOTR. But, I can't take anything away from them because of this. (Keep in mind, I'm excluding the newer Star Wars films. That is a different issue, I think.) However, it is my opinion that the Lord of the Rings trilogy is the greatest single project in film history. This is for a few simple reasons. One, it is the BIGGEST and most ambitious project ever undertaken in film. I can't even express the incredible amount of work and sheer number of people that were required for the making this film. I mean, we're talking about 3 simultaneous films... all of them massive, epic films with an absolutely ridiculous attention to detail in each one. Never has there been such a flawless combination of skill (in acting, production, art, and many other areas), perfectionism, and scope in a film or series of films. Yes, even in the original Star Wars series. In many ways, those films were small projects compared to LOTR. Not to mention the fact that LOTR is the new Star Wars in so many ways - it is the film franchise that will define pop culture for many, many years to come... exactly like Star Wars did. I will make a final note that it is a little unfair to compare a trilogy with such a rich literary background to one with practically no literary background. This is really what afforded the LOTR filmmakers the incredible wealth of material that they had at their disposal. But, since you are asking me to pick, this is my decision.
