Issue:
Findings in a study by the Nat'l Safe Kids Campaign included: Of vehicles surveyed, more than 1/3 of motorists rolled through stop signs at intersections & 10% of motorists didn't even slow down before the stop sign; at intersections with marked crosswalks, 25% of vehicles stopped in or past crosswalks; when only child pedestrians were present, 1/3 of motorists violated the stop signs; & at intersections where pedestrians were crossing, 25% of drivers did'nt come to a complete stop. Each year, stop sign violations are associated with approximately 200 fatal crashes & 17,000 non-fatal injury crashes. Children are at risk of injury when stop sign & pedestrian right-of-way laws are violated.
Belief:
STOP! TAKE 3 TO SEEâ„¢ is a campaign designed to educate motorists about the correct way to observe STOP signs and to teach children how to safely cross the street. By observing all stop signs and teaching our children to properly cross streets we can increase the safety of our streets and ensure our children, and all pedestrians, are safe.
