Description:

It is now February, in the next month here in Canada seals have their pups on large sheets of ice that are starting to break up on Canada's Eastern Seabord and the Gulf of the St Lawrence.  Many people think the baby seal hunt has been shut down.  But it has been reopened.  Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans blames the dissapearence of codfish from the Grand Banks because of the the seal hunt ban.  They say the ban on the seal hunt allowed the seal population to grow and the more seals, the more codfish eaten by seals.  When John Cabot first came to Canada he reported that the cod were so plentiful that the ship was sailing through an ocean of cod and a basket lowered down over the side would come back filled with codfish.  It's not the seal's fault that the cod has disappeared from the Grand Banks.  There is no reason to club a baby seal that is less than a month to death except for the fact that is when their pelts are the highest quality.  Canada should outlaw the yearly seal hunt once and for all.  Cut and paste the following URL into your browser to see how the seal hunt is carried out (warning not for the squeamish).

I wouldn't give a care if the seals were killed instantly but clubbing them is inhumane and cruel just for the pelts. Why can't they just only use guns and aim for the head? =P

Im signing for those cute animals!
Save Moonlight!!

Yet again...a comment based on emotion and the image of a cute, cuddly baby seal that has been programmed into the minds of the masses. Please read the last few posts by people that actually know the industry...because they actually live close to the industry. Don't bow to the will of a terrorist like paul watson.

only people who don't have hearts who kill baby seal.just imagine if seals take turn and kill yours

... or a cow, or a chicken, or a fish, or that ant you step on...

For all those that think that Watson or any other anti-seal organization isn't in it for the $ - read this excerpt from an interview with him:

Barbara F: Are you suggesting that they fight for seals rather than other animals because it's easy, or easier to raise money that way, or because it's a profit maker for the?

Paul Watson: Well it's definitely because it's easier to make money and because it does make a profit because there are over a thousand animals on the endangered animals list and the harp seal isn't one of them.

Plus it was entertaining. I guess there really is NO argument based on logic.. all the little ones scattered. This thread needs a tumbleweed.

I think banning Wesley was a mistake. His nonsensical rabble-rousing did more to show the fallacies of this cause than any counter-argument I've read.

Just wanted to say HI to Wesley, just in case he's been watching. So sorry you can't post. From all of us "seal murdering thugs" We miss you!!

I can't help it, but it freaks me out that the animal rights groups are following Hitler's quotes word for word. And for anyone else reading this, I'll say it again...it's all about the MONEY. Organizations like greenpeace, ifaw, sea shepherd, and the humane society are looking to fatten their bank accounts...they couldn't care less about actually protecting the animals---so don't be a sucker. Think for yourself, don't follow the will of the masses, do some THOROUGH research, and come up with your own conclusions.

Of course they did. They've moved on to whatever pseudo-cause the media has made important this week. The best thing about "activists" is that they generally either bow out when something gets hard, or go way over the top and do something stupid like blow up a ship.

The kids on this board, I dare say, are probably in the first group. Words with too many syllables, grammatical correctness, and a few Strous quotes scared them off.

Notice how everyone left after logic and evidence were demanded?

No hatred... sarcasm... I was pointing out how hatred tactics are being used by protesters to rally the masses - a tactic based on Strous' theories and demonstrated to be extremely effective by certain terrorist groups and the Conservatives, for example. Again, I'm stressing the use of emotion rather than logic being used by individuals such as Deborah, Pat and Wesley. I'm originally from rural NL, by the way.

Thanks for clairifying that, Mike. I didn't pick up on the sarcasm - my apologies!

Same here.

Mike... what's with the Newfie hate? Don't you consider Newfie hate no different… and just as ignorant as any other group hate?

There really should be a sarcasm font on my computer. I was simply paraphrasing most of the anti-sealing arguments I've heard so far. I was hoping the comparison of whitcoat hunting to the realism of Days would give it away. Your explanation of the Hitler quotes was exactly my point, BAre E, and a great explanation by the way. Hatred, propaganda, and appeal to emotion are the basis of rallying the masses. The fact that they were all from Hitler was merely an added bonus.

Mike, you say that everything we fought so hard to defend will be gone forever. That's actually OUR POINT. Our grandfathers and their fathers before them fought for democracy, freedom, and human rights. What the anti-sealing fools are trying to do is take away the right to hunt this one animal in particular (what makes the seal different from other animals is still not clear, and has been discussed in this thread and never explained by the fools).

So don't play the rights and freedoms card, when that's exactly what we are trying to protect when we come to the defence of the seal hunt. Heck, you're the one providing quotes from Hitler, of all people!

I'm not going to respond to your ignorant and rude remarks about Newfoundlanders, but out of curiosity, why do the anti-sealing fools continuously single out Newfoundlanders, when participants in the Canadian seal hunt come from all of the Maritime and Atlantic Provinces, Quebec, France, etc? Perhaps if you do some research into the facts, you'll come to this realization one day?

In providing us with that quote from your inspirational leader, The Führer, were you again attempting to prove one of our points? It's been proven time and time again that the anti-sealing profiteers continuously paste grisly images in the media intending to appeal to the emotions of the public. So Mike, I do agree that your quote is quite fitting. Emotions and lies have fuelled the fight against sealing, while reason appears to have only gotten through to those of us who are not too blind to see the facts.

And what exactly is your cause again? Are you protesting the use of animal fur by humans (which is an honourable cause, if you're so inclined), or are you intent on destroying the reputations of a good, upstanding people such as Newfoundlanders? I personally believe that you and people like you are losing sight of your goal. BTW...we didn't rape the ocean...blame that on Spanish and Portugese trawlers off our coast licensed by the CANADIAN federal government. Fishermen around here have been protesting that practice for years.

Stop mocking a worthy cause. It's as realistic as the slaughter and cover-up of every whitecoat. Plus, what else will everyone talk about after you Newfie a-holes finish raping the ocean and everything we fought so hard to defend is gone forever? You make me sick.

I'm not sure if Mike C is serious or making a joke. Are you referring to the worthy cause being "save Day's of our lives" or are you making fun of the suggestion that there is a cover up of a whitecoat hunt? Was that sarcasm in the previous post "use emotion for the many and reserve reason for the few"? It seems like you're arguing against the protest in one breath and then for it in another? As for us "newfie a-holes" making you sick, would you care to explain this comment? Are you suggesting that all Newfie's make you sick... which would indicate your superiority complex? Have you thought about your comment on Newfies “raping the ocean” or is that simply an emotion based comment? As stated, the amount of species taken by inshore fisherman pails in comparison to what has been dragged off the Grand Banks by our friends in the EU…

It seems that Pat is too busy over at the "save Day's of our lives" thread to respond. Seems like a good fit - fictional stories, that is.

A few quotes are coming to mind:
"If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed.
How fortunate for leaders that men do not think.
It is always more difficult to fight against faith than against knowledge.
I use emotion for the many and reserve reason for the few."
Very fitting considering they originated from an individual filled with such hatred.

Funny...seems to me that's what greenpeace, ifaw, the humane society and sea shepherd are all practicing.

Is there anyone else that has any VALID, or LOGICAL points to ponder in regards to the seal hunt? I haven't read any yet.

It is a shameless pratice that must be stopped. Rich woman should look for faux fur, not have innocent babies killed for their selfish purposes. The insanity of these and the many other animal killers needs to come to an end. I thought we were out of the stone-age.

Pat at least you're against all fur hunts but you have to give it a break with those catch words; we're not fundraising here..."innocent babies"... come off it... Are there villain Chickens being killed and criminal cows? While I agree that they can't be killed inhumanely, seals are no different than any other animal and the seal hunt no different than any other hunt. Are you against slaughtering Lamb, Cattle, chicken and other animals or just Seal?

Perfect example of the kind of mentality that we've discussed.

"It's a shameless pratice" would indicate that you think there is no shame in hunting seals. "Shameful" would be the word to use here. Also, "pratice" is not a word - "Practice", however, is.

Which rich woman are you talking about, exactly? You said "woman" instead of "women", so I can assume that you only think one woman uses all this fur. She must be rather large indeed.

I thought that we'd made it pretty clear(if you had bothered to read, or research) that seals were also used for their meat, fur and to make essential fat supplements, etc...

"The insanity of animal killers need to end" Like I said earlier, do you even know how many products you use/eat contain animals? Where do you draw the line? A cute animal? An ugly animal? Insects? Plant? The bacteria that lives everywhere on everything you can touch/eat? Seriously, everything is "alive". You are a "killer" if you've eaten anything edible - this is the circle of life, it's worked for 30000 years. Some keyboard cowboys aren't going to change it.

Like I said initially, are there any LOGICAL points to add? You've only furthered the atmosphere of blind ignorance on the issue. There was not one point in your post that actually has any merit. It is your opinion that the hunt needs to be stopped, but you haven't given us the grace of any reasons.

Just because you've seen a few cute pictures, you think that it is barbaric. It's life. Things die so that other things can live. Have you ever seen a cow being slaughtered? A chicken getting it's head lopped off by blades while it's hanging from its feet on a hook? What about the poor baby seeds that are soaked in water for a few days, and then eaten alive as bean sprouts? You are like the rest of the sheep that have posted. You know not what you believe. You base everything on emotion, and nothing on logic and common sense.

"Immediate banning can result from any of the following: The posting of pornography; discriminatory remarks"

Can I assume that that corky aka **** aka Wesley will be banned from spewing hate?

I reported him to the site owners this morning, and he has now been banned.

I'm glad to know that hateful and abusive remarks will not be tolerated here.

If anyone else would like to debate the issue, you sure have an audience. Let's just keep it civil and mature!
