Stop the Canadian Baby Seal Slaughter323 Signatures
Description:It is now February, in the next month here in Canada seals have their pups on large sheets of ice that are starting to break up on Canada's Eastern Seabord and the Gulf of the St Lawrence. Many people think the baby seal hunt has been shut down. But it has been reopened. Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans blames the dissapearence of codfish from the Grand Banks because of the the seal hunt ban. They say the ban on the seal hunt allowed the seal population to grow and the more seals, the more codfish eaten by seals. When John Cabot first came to Canada he reported that the cod were so plentiful that the ship was sailing through an ocean of cod and a basket lowered down over the side would come back filled with codfish. It's not the seal's fault that the cod has disappeared from the Grand Banks. There is no reason to club a baby seal that is less than a month to death except for the fact that is when their pelts are the highest quality. Canada should outlaw the yearly seal hunt once and for all. Cut and paste the following URL into your browser to see how the seal hunt is carried out (warning not for the squeamish).
PS. There is another good Seal Forum here. "More Seals Need Saving." Have a look and find out what is happening to these beautiful creatures: http://www.youchoose.net/forum_topic/more_seals_needing_saving Loading People... |
As soon as I'm finished typing this post, I'm heading to Vogue furriers in St john's to buy me a new sealskin jacket. Mmmmmm....wonder if it comes in white? hahahahahahahahahahahaha
Typical that is just the response I would expect from you people. You obviously don't have anything intelligent to say so you resort to writing crap. Enjoy it while you can because we will shut you down. You want to play nasty well two can play that game. I know of 4 sealers who won't ever be hurting another seal. Serves them right, they got exactly what they deserved.
I agree with Samantha the assholes who actually do these things should get the same thing back. What you give out comes back double
This is horrible what some people do to animals they feel pain too. I agree with Samantha thear should be harser consecuences for assholes who think they can hurt defencless animals.
Once more for the dummies Derek P. my info. comes straight from the Canadian goverments website. As I said check it out for yourself. You will also note if you read my post properly that I have stated that the 'whitecoat' hunt is illegal.
Commercial quotas:
The management measures for 2006-2010 allowed for a one-year total allowable catch (TAC) of 270,000 harp seals in 2007. In 2006, the harp seal TAC was 335,000. In 2008, the TAC is 275,000.
The one-year TAC for hooded seals in 2007 was 8200. The TAC was 10,000 in 2006. In 2008, the TAC is 8200.
In 2007, the TAC for grey seals was 2000 in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and 10,000 on the Scotian Shelf. In 2006 TAC levels were the same. The TAC in 2008 is 12,000. The hunting of grey seals will continue to be prohibited on Sable Island. These figures are hot of the Canadian governments website.
Also, the UK government has written to the EU asking them to ban all seal products. Hopefully that will come to fruition.
I don't blame Captain Watson having no respect for human life. Why should he when those murderers have no respect for animal life? I am behind him on that one.
Just to show how clueless the sealers are they go out in boats that aren't suitable for the conditions and the Canadian government allow them to do it. Now who has no respect for human life? I wonder who will be held accountable for the deaths of the 4 sealers after the event is investigated? Will the Coast Guard be guilty of negligence? The plot thickens, but we will just have to wait and see.
You know nothing.... you're still an ignoramus. Paul Watson is a moron who doesn't give a d*mn about human life. He is responsible for many Newfoundlanders losing employment...if anyone tries to sabotage the oil patch in Alberta or the auto parts industry in Ontario they are jailed. I have no idea where you get your numbers...the quota this year and last was about 200000 animals...and the whitecoat hunt is still illegal.
More info. off the Canadian governments website, this time concerning exceeding the quota:- "The 2003-2005 TAC of 975,000 harp seals was exceeded by 10,000 animals, largely due to the competitive nature of the hunt. To address this situation, the Department met with an industry working group to find a suitable sharing arrangement for all groups involved in the Gulf hunt. For 2006, the Minister sub-divided the Gulf allocation among Gulf fleets with the goal of reducing the competitive nature of the hunt and ensuring the most humane hunt possible. For subsequent years, DFO will further consult with industry to find a long-term solution."
Derek P, I have found the following statement from you under the 'Forum' heading on this topic:- "Baby seals ARE NOT clubbed to death! As I said in your other thread, do your homework...there is no seal pup hunt. NO SEALS are clubbed to death--NONE! It's illegal!"
However, I have found the following statement on the Canadian government website dated 2007 - "Because of changing ice conditions, in recent years there has been a considerable increase in the number of sealers hunting from vessels with rifles compared to the number of sealers hunting on the ice with clubs or hakapiks."
Also on the government website is the following"-
"DFO enforces licence conditions and regulatory requirements for firearms, ammunition, clubs, and hakapiks used in sealing to ensure the right tools are used properly for the efficient and humane dispatch of animals."
Harp seals can be legally hunted once they have moulted their white coat, which occurs at about 12-14 days of age. However, they are not usually hunted until they reach the “beater” stage of development at around 25 days old. Blueback (hooded) seals moult their coat as early as 15 to 16 months of age, at which time they can be hunted. The seals hunted are self-reliant, independent animals.
See for yourself it's under 'Fisheries and Aquaculture Management' on the governments website.
So it appears you are wrong about seals being clubbed to death - babies and juveniles.
Firstly Derek P. Captain Paul Watson is the President and founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, (www.seashepherd.org) and co-founder and former member of Greenpeace. I am not aware of his involvement with IFAW, but will stand corrected if I am wrong.
Secondly, I have as much sympathy for the dead sealers as they did for their victims. Hopefully their families will now know what it's like to lose someone they love. This senseless slaughter is on hold for a week thank God, while the fellow murderers of the dead attend their funerals. It has even been reported that some of the murderers won't be returning to the hunt because they have been hit hard by the deaths. I can only hope that is true so less seals have to die.
I have absolutely no time or respect for any person who can treat an animal in that way. Anyone who is capable of that kind of carnage is a cold-blooded murderer! I don't care whether they have bills to pay, they are no more important than a seal.
I don't believe the claim that the seals are responsible for the lack of Cod. That is more likely due to human mismanagement and overfishing, so they have only themselves to blame.
I am pleased to see that Belgium and The Netherlands have now banned all seal products in their countries and hopefully other countries will follow suit. We have shut this barbaric practice down before and we will do it again and this time it will be permanent.
Why Derek P, does Captain Watson deserve to spend time in the penitentiary in St. John's? Please enlighten me?
I look up to people who do something positive for the world, not degenerates who are intent on destroying it. I don't have 'blind faith' in Captain Watson, but I do agree with him on certain issues.
IFAW leader Paul Watson also made light of this situation a little earlier...this is the person you look up to? The person whose word you believe without question? That ignorant **** deserves to spend some time in the penitentiary in St John's, Newfoundland. You won't find too many anti-sealers there...comments like Deborah K's and Paul Watson's are in very poor taste, whatever your persuasion.
"club a Canadian Sealer"? What the hell do you think the sealers are...monsters? I'll tell you what they are...they're people with families, homes, mortgages, grocery bills, utility bills, a car to nurse through the winter, etc. How dare you insult men who gave their lives trying to support thear families, you ignoramus.
4 sealers have been killed in Canada when their boat overturned, whilst being towed through the ice by the Coast Guard. Could that be a case of karma??
Let's change the world for the better.Sounds like justice to me.
Save a seal - club a Canadian sealer!
it is unessesary and inhumane. It is upsetting so many people. I am positive the EU will ban the sale of seal furs in europe,Help make our world a better place, for humans, and the beautiful wildlife that God so magnificently created..
Dont help accumilate more evil in our world, there is too much already.
Also please boycott all Canadian fur products.
I think not

Heavy ice and bad weather are hampering the start of the controversial Canadian seal hunt
Only 15 seals have so far been killed in the hunt, as pursuing vessels found their paths blocked by the sea ice.
"It's a very slow start," Fisheries and Oceans Canada spokesman Phil Jenkins said.

Hunters do not kill baby seals...it was outlawed in 1986, and it is STILL illegal. Like I said in another thread, I am not pro fur...I am not anti-fur.I'm kind of indifferent to that issue. But I am anti ignorance. Please do more research before making outrageous claims about which you obviously have very little knowledge. For the record, I also believe leg hold trapping to be cruel...but since I don't know if it is even practiced anymore, I refuse to comment on it. The seal hunt you speak of has been dead for 22 years.
HEAR HEAR! I agree 100%. BTW After a quick search it seems that leg hold traps are almost illegal worldwide, well developed countries anyway.
Also look at the other fur industry, leg hold trapping, I urge everyone here to stop by and sign the anti-fur forums and campaigns as well,

Other Canadians do think differently. Hunters definetly kill baby seals for the money, do they laugh all the way to the bank too?
http://www.antisealingcoa lition.ca/blog/...
Wake up and smell the coffee people...you're being taken for a ride...and the "animal rights" hypocrites are laughing all the way to the bank.
Reminder to Canadians. If you want to write your Member of Parliament or the Prime Minister, you do not need a stamp, postage is free.
You're wrong...they are shot with a large caliber high powered rifle...where I live I have firsthand knowledge, unlike the rest of you.
The Canadian Broadcasting Company is where I got the information. Take it up with them. They say you use the hakipik. Besides, I have no sympathy for anyone who kills an animal for it's fur.
Still haven't done your homework, have you? Have you ever looked at the issue with complete objectivity, instead of allowing yourself to be brainwashed by greenpeace and the ifaw (money hungry hypocrites)? If you have, then you'd see that they are LYING through their teeth just to get people like you to help them fatten their already bloated bank accounts. BTW...in an interview with the CBC a few years ago, the leader if the ifaw said that the spring seal hunt is their best fundraiser. Also, the Farley Mowat is not permitted in Canadian waters because she is not considered seaworthy by coastguard.
The Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) the Government owned network states that seals are killed with a hakapik. You can see what one looks like below. Besides the seal hunt is part and parcel of the entire fur industry. This winter wild animals were killed for their pelts using leg hold traps. I think I'm fair when I have another forum asking to ban all the fur industry, fur farming, trapping and the seal hunt. No animal fur industry should be allowed in Canada at all. As I mentioned the hunt just resumed, the numbers killed are meaningless, it is still the thin edge of the wedge.
This is a Hakipik
http://en.wikipedia.org/w iki/Hakapik
There is some good news, the "Farley Mowatt" a ship is protesting the seal hunt. And filming what is happening. The hunt just resumed. http://www.hsus.org/marin e_mammals/prote...
You people really need to do your homework...juvenile seal hunting off Canada's coast has been illegal since 1986...the pictures that you see which are perpetrated by Greenpeace and the IFAW are at least 22 years old...FACE IT...they're only in it for the money. In the spring, the donations pour in as millions of suckers give in to a form of propaganda. Take my advice, people...do some digging before pronouncing judgement. As for those of you who believe that one can approach a seal...it's a WILD ANIMAL...it will attack and hurt you if you corner it...same as any other animal. By the way, clubbing isn't used any more either...large caliber high powered rifles are used which practically guarantee a humane kill.
