Description:

It is now February, in the next month here in Canada seals have their pups on large sheets of ice that are starting to break up on Canada's Eastern Seabord and the Gulf of the St Lawrence.  Many people think the baby seal hunt has been shut down.  But it has been reopened.  Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans blames the dissapearence of codfish from the Grand Banks because of the the seal hunt ban.  They say the ban on the seal hunt allowed the seal population to grow and the more seals, the more codfish eaten by seals.  When John Cabot first came to Canada he reported that the cod were so plentiful that the ship was sailing through an ocean of cod and a basket lowered down over the side would come back filled with codfish.  It's not the seal's fault that the cod has disappeared from the Grand Banks.  There is no reason to club a baby seal that is less than a month to death except for the fact that is when their pelts are the highest quality.  Canada should outlaw the yearly seal hunt once and for all.  Cut and paste the following URL into your browser to see how the seal hunt is carried out (warning not for the squeamish).

Thanks to all who have signed and will sign. One hundred and sixty nine signatures shows the Canadian Government that people around the world care about the baby Harp Seal slaughter. The baby seals are clubbed to death and skinned in front of their mother.

How would the killers on the seal hunt like it if giant seals came and slaughtered their newborn babies and skinned them and left there lifeless little bodies laying infront of them.

Exactly

I can speak of fantasies too: How would you like it if rainbows and butterflies came and abducted elephants and your daughter?

Now let's get back to the real world. I think I brought up very sensible arguments and respectfully presented the other side of the coin.

Predators in nature do kill right in front of the mother, father, brother, uncle and so on. Do you think the lion stops killing the young in front of the mother zebra? Or that the shark stops in front of mother fish? Or the fox in front of mother hen?

Once more, I don't think the way it is done is nice at all. However to contest the actual fact that non-endangered animals are hunted is pure hyprocrisy, considering the mass of animals on your grocery shelves. And human beings are omnivorous, so yes, it is normal that they eat both plants and flesh.

And if you want to equate human life to animal life, that is your decision, but I certainly do not view it this way. Humans are sentient beings with a conscience, animals not. You wouldn't lodge a protest to the bear government when someone gets mauled in a forest, or to the tiger government when a human gets killed in Africa.

I do respect nature and all of creation, and am an environmentalist. I will fight to defend a just cause, endangerd species for example. What I will not stand though is something totally being blown out of proportion while real problems are being ignored because of the sensationalism of the false problem - something that happens way too often in politics

just cause you stubern hoe dont be all rude to me. im just saying you need to bach up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ok !!!!!!!!!!

Benoit P: I think you're right, but it's still so bad. They can do something, like giving the seals some food, watch them and stop them when they're trying to eat the cods, or move them far away from the cods... but don;t kill them.

well I have canidian friends that tell me other wise,I will not let one canidian change my feelings towards those canidians who have done nothing wrong and also look at this is a bad thing, maybe there would be more cod if people didn't over fish for profit, let the seals live

As I mentionned, first and foremost the cod banks got depleted from overfishing, but now that it is an endangered species, the constantly augmenting seal population IS threatening extinction of cod. You can tell fishers to stop fishing cod or reduce their fishing quota (as Canada has already done), but you can't tell seals to stop eating them.

The population does need to be controlled. The population is augmenting every year.

What I will grant everybody on this forum is that the way used to kill the seals is VERY graphic. So the problem is not the actual hunt, but the way it is done.

Instead of the weapon used on the ice banks, maybe the hunters could use guns or darts, etc. Then it could be more acceptable to all.

I'm not sure I agree with you Benoit P about hunting adult seals as being an answer, but on the other hand I can not deny that your point is valid. Canadian fisherman deserve to make a living. We did drop the quota and I'm not sure that the seals are responsible for the cod not coming back. To tell the truth, I just don't know the answer to that question. But let's leave that aside for a moment. You make an excellent point that does need to be answered. Canada is responsible for setting the quoatas too high and there was over fishing. What done is done and I should not want to play the blame game, the fisherman do have a problem that needs to be solved, you are right on that. No matter what, I'm not sure the codfish are going to come back. Regardless, we can't let Canadain fishermen live on an uncertainty. We can't forget that there is another wrong that needs taking care of. Canadian fishermen who can't fish should be able to earn a living. We just can't walk away and say oh well, we are not going to do anything for you. I'm not sure what needs to be done, but I agree one hundred percent that something does need to be done to help the Canadian fisherman. I'll try to explain that entire communities on the Atlantic are being destroyed because of the disappearance of the cod in another post so people will know about this. The fisherman deserve more than the money they get from seal hunt. A Permanent answer is needed to solve the problem. In Norway their fishery had the same problem. Norway's solution was to turn their fiords into fish farms. They designed it so wild fish could get in and some fish born in the fiords could get out to keep the population genetically healthy. Maybe something like that can be done. But the fisherman's liviliehood has been taken away, that's true.

There is no need for seal hunting. Stop the killing!! How can anybody do this? There is no need to kill animals for anything. They have the right to live!!

As written, there IS a need for seal hunting - the population keeps growing and the cod banks are on the endangered species list.

And you are obviously aware that nature is such that animals hunt and kill each other in the animal kingdom, and usually the balance is kept that way. When predators are absent or lacking in numbers, sometimes something needs to be done about it to protect another species.

It is an overly graphic process, I'll grant you that, with blood radiating on the white snow banks. That is probably the essence of this overblown story internationally.

Millions of cows, chickens and fish get killed every year away from the public eye and there is no such outrage about it.

Again, I am all in favor of protecting endangered species be it fauna or flora, but seals aren't one of them, and cod is.

If you want to campaign for endangered species, pressure Japan in stopping killing whales and dolphins, pressure governments to preserve national parks, and find out which human or animal action is threatening the survival of a species.

The native populations also have hunted seals for skins, flesh and fat for centuries to clothe themselves, feed themselves and provide lighting. The same as fishers and hunters of other species who are earning a living from it.

This particular issue just isn't reported fairly and is getting an unwaranted amount of media buzz

How about you guys get REAL information before jumping on a bandwagon like sheep?

-The seal population keeps growing exponantially in Canada every year even with yearly augmented hunting quotas authorized by the government

-Baby seals haven't been killed in Canada for many years - no fluffly white cubs fresh out of the womb get slaughtered, not that Paul McCartney would like you to know.

-The constantly augmenting seal population threatens a REAL endangered species: COD - too many seals eat too much cod, and the cod banks are already on the brink of extinction following irresponsible fishing.

I'm all for protecting flora and fauna that needs the protecting, but it pisses me off when falsehoods are being broadcasted worldwide regarding this issue. Get your facts straigh!

There is such a things as balance and population control in nature and nobody complains when humans ensure for example that a non-native species wrecking havoc in an ecosystem is kept in check!

You have my support one hundred percent and anyone who looks at those pictures and doesn't want to club one of those men well your tough.

When I read the above text, my stomach turned. I swear I nearly chucked up! People really dont have the right to do that. Nature didnt make these animals so they could be slaughtered. Its gotta stop & fast.

SAVE THE BABY SEALS!!! STOP the Killing !!!!

It has to stop. I don't care if some rich people want to waer them! We can kill them ass ell by the way!

How can someone kill this innocent creatures because some rich people can wear their fur??!!
I really HATE IT!!! It has to be stopped RIGHT NOW!!!! If someone can hear our voice, please STOP IT!!!
That animals didn't do anything to us so why do we constantly have to KILL them??? Fake fur is better in every way and no one hurts and nature is in peace!! Please STOP THE SLAUGHTERING!!!!

Nikki, I know what you mean, this makes me ashamed to be a Canadian. The seals were here first and the giant ice fields are essential to the harp seals survival. The ice fields are close to food, the baby seals can't swim or fend for themselves, so the icefields protect the helpless seals against preditors, they are the only place where the parents can be near food and still remain close to the baby seals they are old enough to learn how to swim and learn how to fend for themselves.

I cant believe this is still going on, and these lovely animals are being killed. Shame on the canadians for allowing this to happen. It should be stopped NOW

This is cruel and heartless, something needs to be done to stop this!!!!

I joined Greenpeace because of this issue back in the '70's and its STILL going on. I do not give up faith that this environmental injustice will one day be halted

I am ashamed to be canadian-American!

I am ashamed to be Canadian. How could my government subsidize something like this! It's the human's fault that codfish are disappearing, not baby seals!

Seals are so cute, i can't see how someone could kill them.

it is wrong and it is brutal . they are helpless defendless creatures being clubbed to death for no reason!
