Description:
I am the wife of a truck driver & we have 5 children. My husband has been a truck driver for over 20 years & I am starting this petition in support of the truckers high fuel strike today 4/1/2008. Oil co. made a profit of 123 billion dollars last year & the exec.feel that is a reasonable profit for a company to make. Diesel fuel is up to an all time high of $4.03 a gallon. The American trucker can not survive with the price of fuel being so high & something has got to change. The hard working class American citizen is worrying about being able to support their families because the average person cannot afford these rediculous fuel prices & President Bush is not doing one thing to help as a matter of fact he took Air Force one on a trip around the world I wonder who paid that fuel bill? Bush needs to do something to stabalize the oil prices NOW!!!! Please sign this petition if you think these fuel prices need to go back down. When we have reached 750 signatures or more I will send it where it needs to go. Thank you & God Bless the USA
I think they were right to strike, We need to get the cost of fuel down for everyone. I do know that the government has something to do with the prices. And I think this is why the prices are so high even tho the cost of oil is going down. I read that on a fact check site. It may be that they are raising money for McCain/Palin??? Don't really know. But the prices have doubled since a democrat has been president. When President Clinton left office I think a gallon of gas was around $1.89 or so.
thats why we need to get a republican oil tycoon out and find alternative fuel sources. everything we have today is because of truckers and tankers etc. its outrageous. disel used to be cheaper than gas, but now its turned around.VOTE OBAMA
I totally agree that someone needs to step up and take charge if the powers that be won't do it. Who can we trust? America depends on us truck drivers. Who is going step up and make things right for us and the rest of America. No one can afford the gas and diesel prices for long.
Our government has sold out it's people to those that make them richer. They have allowed businesses overseas and that created more unemployment and indebited the USA to likes of China and the countries controlling our fuel. Good luck to the Truckers, bring America back to America as it should be. Next time you fly your flag look where it came from 90% of you will find that your Old Glory was made in China!
Good luck with your petition. I hope it makes a differenc with this important issue affecting so many!

MichaelR B.B.B.09this administrations links to the oil industry has harmed us all.as a trucker your husband is feeling an immediate threat to his livelyhood that i empathize with.we are all paying more for every thing, fuel, food, clothes, etc.while wages either go down stay stagnent or go oversease.in the mean time the Bush,Saudi royal, and cheney familys get richer and richer.a boycott is a good start but i believe these people should be in jail thier greed has put our intire economy and thus our country in danger of collaps.
Good luck with this, Melissa. I feel for your family and all truckers right now,but something tells me that Bush does not really care how this is impacting the people of this country. I agree with the person that suggested striking. When truckers are paying out more in fuel than they are earning in a week, where is the incentive to drive? You might think about setting up a strike fund so that truckers can refuse to pay these prices. If people aren't getting their goods delivered, then you'll see some action.
We operate a 4 truck operation that hauls produce to Alaska out of Seattle and our fuel costs have almost doubled in the last 6 to 8 months. When one considers the insurance, licensing, driver saleries, and fuel costs there isn't any money left for maitenence or breakdowns. My husband was involved in the truck stike in the '70s and wrote the song behind alot of it. He is currently redoing this and we are getting it out to radio stations again. The song's title is "Truckers Shutdown". Yes, we need to take action and we need to not sit by and hope this goes away. People have a voice and if we get to gether and make our voice noticed we will accomplish what we have set out to do.
I am not a truck driver, just your average Joe. I may not be able to make a big difference but if trucking companies and other companies that have fleet vehicles ,like the electric company and phone company stop driving, someone will take notice. My father told me of the trucker strike in the 70's and said it worked. I know I couldn't do without pay for a week so I guess truckers can't either but companies can make a difference. Of course I haven't thought this through as thoroughly as many and it is a knee jerk reaction but maybe it will spark some thought. So if there are any CEO's that read this, realize you can make a difference.
the us goverment must be replaced everyone of them
It appears that we are in a downward spiral! Prices going up and jobs going down.(my husband and I were team drivers for a long time) those that are lucky enough to still have there jobs are finding that the wages are not keeping up with the prices for gas, food, and the needed supplies to even support our families. What the heck is going on and what is the answer??????? Or who is the answer???
MY brother was a truck driver, and fuel prices are outrageous everywhere. IN canada our fuel prices are 145 a litre .It's enough for hard working people trying to make a living. My brother has retired now but enjoyed traveling for many years.I wish people would take things to heart, and realize hard working people deserve a chance too.
Count me in. The will continue to up the prices for consumers and put ALL the blame on the truckers. Most of know better. As with the oil companies, it's all about greed and no care about truck drivers and consumers. Bush continues to stock pile oil products and has never cared about our own country
Bush and his retarded cronies have the USA in such a mess,we may never be able to dig ourselves out. You are absolutely right, it's all about greedy money mongers; All their ugly faces should be posted everywhere there is a human being to see these legalized criminals mug shots. They need to be exposed for the horrendous low-lifes they are. Bush and all his crooked friends need to be sent to the moon, never to return. Got to be a place in hadies for monsters like him. He doesn't give a rats butt about our poor soldiers getting maimed and killed. He needs to stay away from church, the danged hipocrit! He is by far the worst president America has ever had!
To Sandy V. Thank you so much for your comments but I did not see your signature actually on the petition. Hopefully you will get this message & make your opinion count by signing the petition. Thank you, Mellissa D.
After being in the trucking business for 20 years, I cannot see how anyone can survive with the price of fuel so high. Something definitely needs to be done. I'm proud of you Mellissa for taking the initative and I hope others will follow your lead.

Two fields in Alaska that need to be developed is the Naval Reserve and the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, (ANWR). Both of these oil fields have been locked up by the Federal Government for decades. The Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) is only 1/3 utilized. This line can pump 2.2 million barrels of oil a day. Now it is just pumping 900,000 barrels.
It takes a minimum of 5 years to develop and produce oil from a field. The Environmentalist think we all should be walking to work and living in the ground for warmth.
The environmentalist lobby is so strong that they have blocked new refineries. If you can't refine the crude oil there is no need to pump out our reserves. We need new refineries too. The ones we have that have not been damaged by hurricanes or other disasters are running at full capacity. We should be lobbying for more refineries too.
A lot of the fuel price you pay at the pump is taxes. When was the last time your roads were fixed? The Government, City, County, State and Federal have their hand out everytime you pump a gallon of gas. Find out what the percentages of tax and cost is. I think you will be shocked to see that about !/3 of the price of gasoline is to the oil companies. I am not defending the oil companies just shedding light on how our government also is profiting from every gallon you pump and what do you receive for it?
It is time for the government to quit wasting money on pet projects that do not provide for the masses. It is also time for the oil companies to roll back some of their pricing too.
It will be difficult for all of us if truckers strike, but I believe it is necessary. I also believe we should drill for our OWN fuel (Alaska) and start riding bicycles!!!!!!!!!!
Truckers should get some kind of tax break.
I was under the impression that it is almost half of what we pay at the pump is actually taxes. The tax rate on a Federal level was over a dollar per gallon a few years ago and at the beginnig of the year congress passed a bill raising fuel taxes another dollar, over a four year period,I think.Even if fuel was 1 penny you would still pay more than 1.50 a gallon in taxes alone.
You guys are kidding right? Oil prices are kept high by a lack of competition on the export side (OPEC), huge demand increases by industrializing countries (China) and supply uncertainty due to the current environment in the middle east. Banks, Pharmaceuticals, Household Products, Software, Telecommunications,Semiconductors, Consumer Services, and Food, Beverage and Tobacco are all more profitable than Oil, some more than TWICE as profitable.
Sales are up, demand is up and supply is down, so of course profit is up. If you earn .10 for every dollar of revenue (approx margins Exxon-Mobile vs. over .25 for banking and pharma) and you have sales of $100mm your profit will be $10mm. Now imagine your sales triple due to the increased demand and decreased supply. You're still earning the same .10 per dollar, but now you're earning it on $300mm in sales, tripling your profits.
This petition will do nothing, between income taxes on the oil companies and the 19 cents per gallon federal excise tax (average of .26 on the local and state level!!) the Federal Government actually makes more money on gas then the oil companies. If you really want to help reduce your consumption.
to Joey P. You raise some good points but is it better to sit around & do nothing. You don't know if this petition will work or not but the American people need to be heard. Don't be so negative. Reducing consumption is a great concept if your not in the business of transporting goods. On average to fill a tractor trailer w/fuel is about $450.00 & that gets you about 4 miles per gallon when you have to transport goods over long distance how are you supposed to reduce consumption? This is an entirely different situation. Truckers can not survive because they can not charge the customers as much as they are paying for fuel & we need to do something to let them know we are behind them because with out truckers out there you want to talk about prices going up? Mellissa D (sponsor) PS. maybe you could sign the petition & see what happens
Thank you to all of you who are taking the time to do this.
I have to admit I don't know why oil prices are so high. It seems to me that they are being held artificially high by someone. But how they do it, I just don't know. Independent truckers I know are finding it impossible to make a living. And people with families who have to drive to work, drive their kids to lessons, sporting events and things are really feeling the pinch. I have to admit, part of me hopes one day that we won't need fossil fuels. But I think this current surge in prices is totally unfair and is being manipulated for profit somehow. I know an independent trucker and I know he is very worried that his business won't be able to survive. There are thousands of other independent truckers from what I read in the news who are worried that they won't be able to survive much longer. Truckers and other people who have delivery businesses etc. I'd be interested in knowing if someone could explain what is going on? I think there are a lot of us who are confused. In the 70s it was because it was a cartel. But now?
I'm not even from the States,I'm a canuck...but I used to be a trucker. Truck driving is the single most important job in the US and Canada...my reason for saying that? Well, name something in your house that's never been on a truck. Everything in your house was on a truck at some point. Imagine, truckers have an impact on EVERY household in North America and beyond. You have my sig. Maybe this will have some influence up here in the great white north too.
Thank you for your comments you guys from Canada. Make sure you send this petition to as many people as you know. Who knows maybe we can make a difference. Mellissa D.
I think if enough people start speaking out it will. But what Derek said is true, we depend more on the trucking industry than other countries because Canada is so large and our population is small. You can see it in the prices in the store. I paid $1.19 for my favourite soda for years. But during the last year the price has been going higher and higher. Today I paid $1.99 and they were all that price. My favourite hard candies have more than doubled in price over the last year because they come from Switzerland.
