Forum Discussion for The Confederate Flag back on state house in sc

I understand that to some it means pride but to a large group of people it means slavery racism and such. Why offend people.
What's the point?

The Confederate Flag is a very important part of our Historyalmost as much as Old Glory Herself. I am prowd to be apart of the Confederate History as My Great Grandfather was a part of the war. We still own and live on the farm that he Homsetaded after the wars end.
Any Male or Female that has served our Old Glory cannot ever forget the feelilng of seeing it fly in any location after being out of the US during a war. The pride that it give as a constant reminder that Freedom Is NOT FREE. The other fact of the matter is that so many people of the US Disrespect the Flag on Many occasions, Just because they do not care or know of it's very importance. I still belileve that it should be flown over the capital as-well as other locations without any flaque from self-richous organizations that claim that it is a sign of racism, when in fact it should be noted as the very day that they received their Independence or Freedom.
I shall always be a REBEL of THE CONFEDERACY OF THE UNITED STATES !!!! NO ONE CAN TAKE THAT AWAY, IN THE SAME MANNER I AM A VETERAN OF THREE WARS TO CONTINUE OUR FREEDOM AS WELL AS TO SHOW OTHERS WHAT FREEDOM MEANS.

THANK YOU

FRANK

I don't think that people are correct in thinking that the flag represents "SLAVERY". It is representative of the state and what has happened in the past to that state. Just because some people believes that is stands for something bad, there are many more who believe in it for the greater good of the state. My husband grow up understanding the significance of the flag and its history, and we think it should be kept for many reasons, good and bad, and "SLAVERY" is not one of the reasons.

I believe the flag should be flown anywhere sees fit .But my husband tells me not to fly it in front of my house cause somebody may shoot our house up so I fly it in my back yard.I believe it should be where it is at and another at the momument.

I don't think so. Yes, the Confederate flag represents the states' right to govern themselves - I get that. But it also represents a big part of the Civil War - SLAVERY. A paraphrase of my favorite comedian goes like this:

I have a friend who said to me once, "The Nazis were bad, and we still drive around in VWs."

"Yeah, but we don't put a VW on top of the state house."

The Confederate flag no more represents slavery than the American flag represents rebellion(I'm sure that is what many natives of England might think of it). There is no way that Americans will ever stop flying their flag just because it ruffled the feathers of some. In the same way, descendants of Confederates will not stop flying their flag in remembrance of those who gave their lives for what they believed in.(And contrary to popular belief, it was not just a simple belief over whether or not slavery should remain legal.) I think slavery was awful, but the other things that were planned for the South would have destroyed families and lives just like slavery. Try reading up on the real history of the Civil War instead of just watching a couple of Hollywood movies and thinking you are an expert. Let people remember their ancestors as they see fit and if you don't like it, the flag waves pretty high so just don't stretch your neck looking up at it!

The Confederate Flag is important to many people for various reasons, some good, some bad. Nevertheless, it is a part of our history and I would think is covered by the right of "free speech." The principle of free speech is more important than personal repulsion.

It's a part of our nation's history and I believe that if you try and legislate the past out of existence and try to bury it, you'll just end up repeating it again. The Confederate Flag is just a flag, you might not agree with what it stood for, or for what people want it to stand for today, but it should not be forgotten. Good or Bad, we cannot forget our history no matter what side of the flag you were on.

The Confederate flag is a symbol of a Confederation that went to war and lost.
It should be remembered in an historical content.
But how is it different from Germans flying a swastika flag?
Even the Russians no longer fly their Soviet flag.
Remembering, and respecting those who died in their belief of honor under their flag does not mean that flag should continue to be displayed.

This letter is out of respect for the thousands of veterans that forght under the Flag of The Confedercy.
The flag had been respected through the years. That is until a bunch of red neck white trash wanted to associate this beautiful old symbol of belief of a vanishing society and times gone by and graves of sholdiers that gave their lives for it and turned it into a symbol of racial hatred.
This is not what I see when I view this flag. The Confederate Flag should remain a symbol of a time gone by and still be respected for the men that gave their life for it.
When I see whites waving it off the back of pick up trucks and displayed so disrespectful on shirts, and caps, it makes me ashamed to be white.
Not all white people associate this symbol with racial issues.
This was a time in our history when men fought for their cause, right or wrong. Please do not disrespect the veteran of The Civil War by banning this flag.
Show respect and ignore the few that bring disrespect to The Civil War Confederate Armies and their families, by insutlting this flag.

I think that the nation has way too much baggage associated with the Confederate flag for it to be acceptably flown at any state house.
