The Confederate Flag back on state house in scForum Discussion for The Confederate Flag back on state house in sc Submitted by jennifer g. on Tue, 12/02/2008 - 16:01
I understand that to some it means pride but to a large group of people it means slavery racism and such. Why offend people. Submitted by Frank G. on Tue, 09/30/2008 - 03:54
The Confederate Flag is a very important part of our Historyalmost as much as Old Glory Herself. I am prowd to be apart of the Confederate History as My Great Grandfather was a part of the war. We still own and live on the farm that he Homsetaded after the wars end. THANK YOU FRANK Submitted by Catrina G. on Sat, 09/27/2008 - 00:07
I don't think that people are correct in thinking that the flag represents "SLAVERY". It is representative of the state and what has happened in the past to that state. Just because some people believes that is stands for something bad, there are many more who believe in it for the greater good of the state. My husband grow up understanding the significance of the flag and its history, and we think it should be kept for many reasons, good and bad, and "SLAVERY" is not one of the reasons. I believe the flag should be flown anywhere sees fit .But my husband tells me not to fly it in front of my house cause somebody may shoot our house up so I fly it in my back yard.I believe it should be where it is at and another at the momument. Submitted by Marzipan G. on Fri, 09/26/2008 - 04:11
I don't think so. Yes, the Confederate flag represents the states' right to govern themselves - I get that. But it also represents a big part of the Civil War - SLAVERY. A paraphrase of my favorite comedian goes like this: I have a friend who said to me once, "The Nazis were bad, and we still drive around in VWs." "Yeah, but we don't put a VW on top of the state house." Submitted by Ricky T. on Mon, 11/24/2008 - 05:29
The Confederate flag no more represents slavery than the American flag represents rebellion(I'm sure that is what many natives of England might think of it). There is no way that Americans will ever stop flying their flag just because it ruffled the feathers of some. In the same way, descendants of Confederates will not stop flying their flag in remembrance of those who gave their lives for what they believed in.(And contrary to popular belief, it was not just a simple belief over whether or not slavery should remain legal.) I think slavery was awful, but the other things that were planned for the South would have destroyed families and lives just like slavery. Try reading up on the real history of the Civil War instead of just watching a couple of Hollywood movies and thinking you are an expert. Let people remember their ancestors as they see fit and if you don't like it, the flag waves pretty high so just don't stretch your neck looking up at it! The Confederate Flag is important to many people for various reasons, some good, some bad. Nevertheless, it is a part of our history and I would think is covered by the right of "free speech." The principle of free speech is more important than personal repulsion. Submitted by Darren S. on Fri, 09/26/2008 - 01:41
It's a part of our nation's history and I believe that if you try and legislate the past out of existence and try to bury it, you'll just end up repeating it again. The Confederate Flag is just a flag, you might not agree with what it stood for, or for what people want it to stand for today, but it should not be forgotten. Good or Bad, we cannot forget our history no matter what side of the flag you were on. Submitted by Ronald C. on Thu, 09/25/2008 - 23:38
