This petition is also being distributed to all major retail video distributors.

The undersigned are boycotting the movie The Golden Compass.

THE GOLDEN COMPASS, a new movie targeted at children, will be released December 7, 2007. This movie is based on the first book of a trilogy by atheist Philip Pullman. In the final book a boy and girl kill God so they can do as they please. Pullman left little doubt about his intentions when he said in a 2003 interview that "My books are about killing God."

The movie is a watered-down version of the first book and is designed to be very attractive in the hope unsuspecting parents will take their children to see the movie -and that the children will want the books for Christmas.

The movie has a well known cast, including Nicole Kidman, Kevin Bacon, and Sam Elliott. It will probably be advertised extensively, so it is crucial that we get the word out to warn parents to avoid this movie.

HELLO! This movie is NOT about killing god, did you even see it? Well, of course you didn't. But it's about a little girl who saves her kidnapped friend, you idiots. Watch it before you boycott it.

This boycottt is probably the best thing you could do to promote this movie. Don't you know there is no such thing as bad publicity? I loved the movie, so I hope you do as much as possible to let everyone knows how much you hate it. (And I'm not an Atheist)

What are you? Just curious.

Great movie. Better than Potters and Rings things in my opinion.

this BOYCOTT is the most infuriating thing to come about this year. Bigots like yourselves and others have ruined an absolutely wonderful movie that has no religious context whatsoever (go look up his actual interview) you stupid religious freaks run around spread propaganda and ruin the fun for the rest of us, besides which the book is a piece of art, meaning, its up for interpertation, the magestirum could be god or how i like to think of it christian bigots like yourself attempting to enforce your life style on everyone else, go to hell, i didn't feel like this movie was an attack on god at all, in fact i loved it,i've seen it twice and i would encourage you to read the book before slandering it.

I am sorry I infringed upon your good time by exercising my right to choose. I choose not to see this movie or purchase the books. Are you saying I have to see this movie so you can enjoy yourself? Doesn't sound very free to me.

Alex is also right about not investigating the actual source itself before making a decision. As a Christian, I believe many do not investigate the Bible fully before condemning it; so why should I feel any differently about reading this 'Compass' book to determine what is contained in it. One person wrote me back and was asking about how Moses was saved from the flood! ooooops...that happened to be Noah. Personally, I have a Book of Mormon and New World Translation of the Bible on my book shelf because I have read and discounted them as equal to the Bible. Anyway, my point is that Alex is right about investigating. As far as enforcing our lifestyle on others; I think that is perception because some just do not like to accept another's point-of-view...so we begin unnecessarily name-calling. In conclusion, if there is anything objectionable; it should be discovered first hand instead of making a blanket accusation without all the facts.

Okay that was pathetic if someone seriously asked you that...well i was christian at one point but i thought everyone knew that much.

He was only saying that by people who are closed minded and bitch about things they dont take any time to see truth vs fiction are ruining his fun of life and such. He didn't say you had to watch it for him to have fun, just dont bash something you seriously know nothing about.

Eric - I completely respect your decision not to see it. That is your right as both a human being and an American. To speak on a more friendly level than others that hold my position - what we (and I assume I speak for most) take issue with is the movement to ruin the experience for others. there are those who not only dont want to see it, but want to take that opportunity away from the rest of us because they disagree with the message. that is what I personally take serious offense to. that and spreading fear, misinformation and misconception with others. the people that are speaking out the loudest against the movie and subsequent books are the people that have the most vague picture of it. they base their stance on bias information and refuse to actually go to the source (the books themselves and the movie) to form a personally grounded position. like i said i respect your decision to avoid this movie, but I do hope you are not one of the blind leading the blind.

Doesn't it feel like middle school all over again... Rumors start and so the people trying to be popular listens to the rumor and acts on it. While others try to find out more about it and the truth behind it or not acting on the information at all. No i'm not grouping by religion just actions.
I think I will make a very good criminal profiler

Although they say Pullman is targeting our kids through this movie and through his books. I am not the least bit worried. I know my God and he is bigger. So with that being said I will just pray for everyone that doesnt know him, May the Lord reveal himself to all in a mighty and profound way. May you all be blessed. For his Glory.

Amen!!!

The movie was actually great, and if you don't give kids a choice about what they believe then you're essentially just brain washing them and that is kind of sick and cruel. Oddly, not unlike the Magesterium (Pullman's name for the Church),

i wouldnt call the movie great. it left out so much and was too jumpy. i dont know why they tried to fit it all in under two hours. they could have stretched it out over the two-hour mark and made the story flow better.

They did that with LOTR 3

You religious people are pathetic.
Sure, you have a right to believe in what you want, and you can force your kids to believe the same things you do, and censor them as much as possible.

But getting your Jesus-loving panties in a knot because of a movie? You've raise lunacy to a new level. The movie is fictional. As in not-true.

Being adults, it's truly a shame that you can not differentiate between a serious attack on religion, and a (bad) adaption of what was an amazing novel.

Like all "bad" films, if your kids want to see it, then they'll find a way to see it. My mum didn't want me to watch the South Park movie when I was little, so I went to a friend's house to watch it.

So what are you going to do: lock your kids inside all day, screen their friends, ring all the parents in the neighbouhood up and tell them your child is not allowed to watch this movie because it's heretical and blasphemous, petition the schools to have it removed from the library...?

If you believed in your God so much, you would be able to take anything thrown at you in stride. Your "faith" should be stronger than anything Hollywood throws at you.

In summary, shut the **** up you whining bitches.

Have a nice day.

I wish I could write as well as Timothy D. he alludes to this point in another point but said it a lot better. There is no such thing as not-true fiction. All fiction expresses the observations, their judgements about things, politics and peeople as well as the core beliefs of the person who writes fiction. Also don't you think kids ask why we don't want them to see this movie? When we tell them what is in the second and third books, many if not most Children who have a realtionship with Christ do not wish to see it.

I know that our constitution has free speech, but how far can we go? Mr. Pullman obviously does not
know God a living God. It is our responsibility to
make sure that our children don't watch this movie.I will not spending my money in this movie.
Sincerely,

Ms. Sutton, Basking Ridge NJ

Free speech is free speech. You cannot put a limit on it just because it you don't like the fact that someone is criticizing christian authoritarianism. You wouldn't want your free right to condemn all of us atheists and agnostics to hell taken away, would you?

Or the right to have books like "The evil's of magic" or something like that... My friends dad was reading it, which made him laugh...hard.

Samantha I have to agree with you, out of all the books made movies I have seen (and remeber, my memory isn't the best. Im going senile at such a young age, what a pitty.) this is without a doubt one of the worst. They changed it so much and left so many, what I consider good, points out. One that bad list is Where the Red Fern Grows, the book was much better than the movie

really?? worse than ella enchanted?? cuz that was the worst i have seen

Okay... I stand corrected. You know I try to block out painful memories, thanks alot. Look for a bill from my therapist soon, mean bad memory bringer person you! >_<

oooh sorry!! :]

*sniffle* It will be okay, you'll be the one paying the bill not me... Teehee. But actually the Golden Compass just frustrated me. However with Ella Enchanted i was angry for a while.

I don't think so. Although this is an atheist film (base to your words), I think it's not depends to the author's religion, and i think you're not suppose to write like that. Is that which jesus tell you??? to tell bad about something if it's not following his/her wants?

SO I've signed this petition not because I think the books are "crap" or "satanic", because I LOVED these books. I've signed it because this was the worst book adaptation I have seen in my whole life.

Linty and Alex.

Can't agree with the two of you more. The "description" at the top of this page is laced with horrendous inaccuracies. What has transpired is an epidemic of ignorant fear. I guess it is because people fear what either they don't know or don't understand. And to make matters worse, their absoulte fear causes them to spread incorrect information that only precipitates MORE fear. When will people start facing adversity instead of running from it while encouraging others to blindly run with them? What has happened to thought?
