This petition is also being distributed to all major retail video distributors.

The undersigned are boycotting the movie The Golden Compass.

THE GOLDEN COMPASS, a new movie targeted at children, will be released December 7, 2007. This movie is based on the first book of a trilogy by atheist Philip Pullman. In the final book a boy and girl kill God so they can do as they please. Pullman left little doubt about his intentions when he said in a 2003 interview that "My books are about killing God."

The movie is a watered-down version of the first book and is designed to be very attractive in the hope unsuspecting parents will take their children to see the movie -and that the children will want the books for Christmas.

The movie has a well known cast, including Nicole Kidman, Kevin Bacon, and Sam Elliott. It will probably be advertised extensively, so it is crucial that we get the word out to warn parents to avoid this movie.

hmm....just an observation. I don't have the desire to debate this movie because I haven't researched it, but the dynamics on this page are quite fascinating.

I commend Wesley for being informed in the statements he made, for giving an intelligent and coherent argument, and for maintaining his integrity without insulting his fellow debaters.

To be quite honest, apart from that I have seen little but frantic attempts to cut down every statement against the movie that has been made. (which is in itself the greatest sign of fear) Michael M. made a relatively good argument, but resorted to speaking with disrespect towards Christians once again. I think Christianity is the most judged/despised religion in the world-and I'm glad that the forum has started getting to the root of that.

In general I just see that the tiniest little reason that can be found to discredit a solid argument from the opposing side is clung to and used to jump to great conclusions with. I have seen both Christians and Non-Christians do the same thing. But in this forum, the trend is obvious.

Before moving on with this discussion, please consider shifting your platform from hating and proving one another wrong to growing and expanding. Accept the solid arguments being voiced. And remember that you are a human, with a finite mind. "Don't be so open-minded that your mind falls out."

Regarding your comment that Christianity is the most judged/despised religion in the world, I would like to point out that it is THE largest religion in the world. It is also the religion of the vast majority of Americans. Frthermore, Christians- particularly devout and evangelical- tend to vote/act as a group. So Christians constitute a VERY POWERFUL bloc. And people fear, hate, and disrust the collusion of power. Hence, the "judgement." Though, really, if we're playing More-Martyred-Than-Thou, I think Islam gets the laurels. Plying the victim card may have been acceptable pre-Constantine, but it certainly isn't now. =/

hmm....well, I certainly didn't intend to play a victim-card, I was speaking out of my own observation and experience with people. Most people I know who aren't Christians have judgments and dislikes towards Christians because of bad experiences they have had with them or stereotypes they have bought into. This is simply my personal observation. This forum displayed that truth in my opinion. I wasn't trying to make anyone feel sorry for Christians. On the contrary, Christianity tends to grow under persecution; for example, the underground church in China.

i totally agree with you. I love debates, and even though i don't always get involved, i love watching form the sidelines and generally agree with points made on both sides.
i don't mean to nitpick, but when an argument has several huge errors in it, the person loses some credibility, and it just irritates me.

of course, me too.

Thank you Elly. I do admit that I have shown some disrespect towards some people, but not Christians in general. I do have issue with Christians condemning me to a place that I don't believe exists, and suggesting I am an evil person for supporting this movie and the subsequent books. I also take issue with those that encourage ignorance by refusing to gain a personal knowledge of the things that they condemn. There have been a few strong-faithed Christians that have made substantial arguements and I have thanked and applauded them for it. But, in my eyes, the majority of christians on this site have been fundementalists and have acted as such (and I take that as a form of disrespect to me.)

Again, thanks for your insight and you comments. They have made me look back on my posts as well as others.

Michael,
I appreciated your genuine response :)
I am a Christian, and I apologize on behalf of those who have "condemned you" or made you feel like you are evil for being interested in these books or movies.
I backed up a bit and read some of the more fundamentalist comments on here, and I definitely think they were unnecessary and know where you're coming from.
I can understand also what these people meant in what they were saying, from what I read anyway, but posting their thoughts did a lot more harm than good-esp. those who posted emotional responses along the lines of protecting the innocence of their children.
But also the more I have backed up on this forum, the more I have seen A LOT of aggression towards people voicing their fundamentalist standpoints. Not referring to you btw. And really, they deserve to be treated with respect, otherwise the other point is lost to the one hearing it. All they hear is their own anger, embarissment, and defensiveness in response.

The way things are approached can change everything.

I know I am one who responded with hostility but I was getting extremely annoyed at certain people. I've been trying to pull back on the hostility and kinder with my responses.

Agreeing with you I would like to add: What people do not understand, they fear for the most part. This fear keeps them from trying to find out more about it and as you said all of this does is create more fear, which mutates into hate. This is how the witch trials and most genocides period get started.

Kevin Bacon is not in this movie. You would think the youchoose.net people would know to check the facts. The studio denied his involvement in 2006 when some publications copied and pasted Eva Green's interview of December 2006 at the time when she named Kevin Bacon as being in consideration for a role. When you can't even name the actors in a movie, it's difficult to believe anything you say. Also, have you seen the movie? Just an example of right-wing Christians jumping on a bandwagon of loud voices ignoring the silent majority. Yes, majority.

one thing: "a boy and a girl kill god so they can do as they please"
actually, no!! thats not what happened. it was an accident, they were trying to help him, and only afterward did they realize that he was god.
i'm not trying to attack anyone or anything, its just bugging me.

Religious people, you are wasting your lives away in ignorance... grow up and put your efforts into something that will actually benefit people, instead of running around trying to denounce a well written, open minded and thought provoking trilogy.

Im reposting this because i want a answer:

I want to see replies to this where all of you people who say this movie is evil give me a point why it is evil and bad, I do not want to see the same answer as the person above you or anything that is obviously copied. As a YOUNG IMPRESSIONABLE child with no common sense to see that this is a book (fiction book mind you) would like to see why im a little lost lamb who is going to hell. Please help me "shepeards".

Hi Aqua B, actually I left you some already on the issue you started about Georgia. I'll leave a little more there and add to it, it's not spiritual advice though. Sorry but I'm not sure you are serious about that, but I did leave you some life advice there.

But that does NOT answer my question wesley answer. It would be nice if you would because you are one of the people who are strongly against it if I remeber correctly.

I am serious about that, I know my father loves me, but maybe if it was easier on y mom she wouldnt be such a pain in the ass for me

Aqua, Frankly when I saw your post the first time I thought it was funny and it did make me laugh. You do have a good sense of humour you know. But nobody repeats a joke twice and it was only then I realized that you were serious and wanted an answer. Aqua, I gave you what I have to offer and I did take the time to do a little research and I did take the time and thought to write a reply, even though it is not the information you wish. I do have feelings that can be hurt even though I am a Christian. I see hostility towards Christians in your posts, not that there is anything wrong with that, for all I know you have good reason to be. But nobody likes being a target. Maybe if you explained why you have such anger and hostility to Christians, I could answer some of your questions and we could have a debate. But nobody likes being told to "shut up" as you did in another post and nobody likes being called names as I have seen in your other posts to other people. Maybe someone else will answer your questions, but if you wish to continue and debate then I have two ground rules. I want to be treated with respect, I don't wish to be called names, I don't want deragatory remarks like "Hitler" or "Stalin." If you disagree with a point of mine, the ground rule is that you respond to the point, not me. You give your reasons as to why you think it's wrong. The point may be bigotted but you should never say I am bigotted but instead saying the statement is biggoted is fair ball. Secondly it can't take place here and it can't be about this movie or books. I read the books, I do not wish to talk about them. The incidences in the books give me a negative reaction and they are a place I do not wish to be. If you wish to know why, it is because I feel a Satanic influence when I speak about the incidents in the plots of those books. They are my feelings and they are legitimate. So I can't give you what you want. But I believe I treated you with respect, in fact it was a Christian who took some time to do a little research into your problem. And I was the Christian who responded to your post even though the 411 wasn't what you wished, I did give what I have and that's all you can ask from anyone. I did it because I did think your post here was very funny and I thought and still do think you are a nice person. So if you wish to debate to me about Christian issues, I am willing to do so, but not on this board. Here is what I suggest, create a new board with whatever title you feel appropriate. I'll find it by going to your profile page -- it lists all the boards you have created. I work for a living so you'll have to be understanding if I don't reply for a few days, I'm likely working overtime and even a little after because I'm tired, so please be patient. Again I can not give you what you wish, only an alternative in return. You may very legitimately feel, "No I really want that all. I really want to speak about the Golden Compass books. That is the issue that is important to me." That is entirely fair. But it will have to be with another Christian. Anyway the choice is yours and you can take me up on my offer or just leave it behind. But I would like to say this, not about you but about everybody. As soon as someone calls me a name or makes derragatory remarks I am gone. I told that to another person on this board and I haven't responded to him since, in fact, this is the las post I'll ever place on this board. I only came back here because I wondered if you saw the 411 I looked up for you. My name is Wesley, I was named after John Wesley and I attend the Methodist branch of the Anglican church that stayed within the church (Anglicans are Episcopalians in the United States). The Wesley brothers were great evangelists and when revolutions and rioting were breaking out all over Europe during the 1840s, where there was turmoil and violence in virtualy every country in Europe, the Wesley brothers started another kind of revolution in England and later America -- a series of spiritual revivals that still go on to this day. I am proud of my heritage and the Weslyan belief: "A holy heart starts with salvation and then becomes a work of God." Anyway good bye and best wishes, I mean that sincerly Aqua, I do hope everything works out for you. I don't know how young you are as a "young person" but I get the impression you are a teenager. I hope you have a wonderful and happy life and there is one thing I do wish to say to you in all seriousness. You have a very keen intellegence and I see a bright future before you because of that. Therefore I hope your hopes for the future come true no matter what path you decide to follow in your life, best wishes Wesley.

Im not trying to attack Christians, only the ones that act idiotic and annoying. There are many here who are logical and kind and i respect them. I did not call any one Hitler, i said his autobiography was an evil book and I apologized to the person when she showed logic because I saw that I was being overly hostile. I was saying shut up to the people who complain to no end without real concrete reason. One of my greatest pet peeves is when someone will complain about something and try to get rid of it and know nothing of it and they just go on rumors, it makes them seem like high schoolers, if that old, that shut out a person because of a rumor. I am sardonic and cynical at times, I recognize and accept that fact, especially when people refuse to use their heads and to my opinion shame the very being they say they live for by being cruel and judgmental. However I can be one of the kindest and open minded people you will ever meet if you can show me you deserve it. Im sorry if you see i called you a name but my intentions for my derragatory are to really say thats how certain people are acting and thats also why I try to add some humor to my post because no matter who you are you deserve some laughter if you have an open sense of humor. I have learned in my dealing with humans that they will listen to a point better if you are not accusing and it seems I broke my own rules, I do apologize but my temper gets the best of me. And I do wish you could say at least point as to why you have your veiws however i do accept your response. In response to me telling you to shut up is because as I said you sounded like an idoit when you said that, i didn't say you were one, i said you saounded like one. "Better to be quit and let someone think you an idiot, than speak and remove all doubt." This is just a fun pearl of wisdom even for me.

Thanks for understanding Aqua and respecting my point of view, your comments on this post were funny and you are right, people do enjoy the fun and laughs you bring. I'm sorry and apologize, you never did call me "Hiter" or "Stalin" I was referring to other people, not yourself, so that was not right for me to say that. Again apologies and best wishes, Wes.

"I read the books, I do not wish to talk about them. The incidences in the books give me a negative reaction and they are a place I do not wish to be. If you wish to know why, it is because I feel a Satanic influence when I speak about the incidents in the plots of those books"

What a cop-out! Satanic? Are you serious? Did we read the same book? Those books are full to the brim with acts of love and humility. I suppose you are one of those christians that sees the word daemon and cringes. No one is asking you to agree to the ideology of the book, but to say you refuse to speak about them because of "Satanic influence" does not bide well for any of your arguements. We are supposed to read all of the Bible verses you throw at us (and I am not threatened to read them) but you can't refer to the very books you are condemning? LAME!

I live in a christian home and i love philip pullman. i believe he is a fantastic author. some people are not open to new or different works of literature or movie media. me? i'm going to see the movie. does that make me atheist? no. just open minded.

Stephany D I agree with you. I comment back today on this subject. I may have been more critical than I should have, but I believe in God and I am a Christian. I listen to the music my grand kids listen to so that I can know what they are listening to and can comment to them on it. the same for this movie. I will go and see it for myself and decide what's really going on.
Miss Gee

Yay this is very good

i think you guys all have issues and need to calm down. i am a christian and i don't even have a problem with this move. if you have found god within yourself you will not be corrupted by a KIDS movie nor would a child. you need to have better faith.

Very good point, which i have seen before

Debbie D.
Do you even hear the bigotry in your own words? What would your reaction be to someone who came up and said he'd pray to Krishna to lead you to the path of enlightenment? I'll bet you'd have a less than welcome reaction. The Hindu's and the buddists have come to accept the existance of other religions. The Dalai Llama actually tought that he who does not know Jesus is lacking in knowledge.
Why is it so difficult for christians and catholics to accept that their are over six billion people on this planet, and it's only natural that a few of them disagree with you.
I'm a retired member of the national guard, a member of the f 434MSb (Yes we're the redbulls that remained for two years), so I've been over seas to fight for the freedom of our people. Should that freedom not extend to movies simply because they don't fit in with your narrow view of the world?

Forgive the chamge of name on my account...my password wouldn't work.

Amanda:
If someone came up to me and wanted to pray over me in the name of Krishna I would simply say, Choose you this day whom you will serve, but as for me and my house we will serve the Lord(Jesus).
I wouldn't be offended nor would I call him a bigot or narrow-minded. Because I know that "Greater is He That is IN Me than he that is in the World." You see, the only time Jesus ever got offended is when they were using the House of God for selling and buying instead of it's intended purpose. And that was because it offended his Father in Heaven, which in turn offended Him. His soul purpose was to do the Will of God. And Christ believers know that to be as spreading the Word of God. Telling the Truth about Who Jesus really is. And as far as the Dalai Llama. If he really knew Jesus as you claim he has professed, He would also know that Jesus said, "No man comes unto the Father but through Me". Unless we as people really start believing in the Words of God, we will never really know who He is. I will never apologize for speaking my opinion just like everyone else. You insinuate that I'm a bigot, but you don't listen to your very words that you are writing to me. Do you know what the Bible says about "narrow-minded" people? Go into a city and preach the Word, If they will not listen...wipe the dust from your feet(as if you were never there). You see, Jesus knew that it was a waste of time to argue, but that didn't stop Him from praying for those who dispised Him. Even after being spit on, cursed at and beat half to death what did HE say. "Father forgive them, for they know not what they do." Even at the end of His mortal life, he had MERCY. So, I don't want to argue with you. If you want to know more about The Word of God for your life, let me know. If you want to argue, I will not respond to any more of your comments.

God Loves us All!!!

I do not wish to be a stumbling block. Please forgive me if I have directly written any uncomplimentary comments to anyone that have been offensive. If you knew me personally, you would know that I'm a caring person. Do I make mistakes?....Yes. I didn't claim to BE God, I only claimed to love Him, and to not be ashamed of His Word. But, he's not finished with me, yet.

Getting the word out about a movie that might be bad for children who’s parents are Christian and want to install in their children Christian values is a good thing. Some say it’s being narrow minded or discriminating. Personally I was one of those children that wanted to see everything my parents did not want me to see. I remember sneaking in to see the “Predator” I was not even a teenager. I remember being so scared I could not muster the strength to get up and leave the theater. Had my parents explained to me why I should not see it I probably would not had wanted to see it, but the answer was always no with no explanation. What I did with my children is gave them a choice. I explained to them the story line, gave them some insight and they made a good decision. Some could make the argument as parent we manipulated them. I will leave that for others to decided. They knew they could go if they wanted to but I ensured they had relevant information to make there decision.

Fiction or not does not matter. All media influences us. What’s important is the decision we make when choosing to be influenced by others weather its music, movies or friends. This is especially true when it comes to your kids. Thanks for making others aware of movies like these
