The undersigned are boycotting the movie
The Golden Compass.
THE GOLDEN COMPASS, a new movie targeted at children, will be released December 7, 2007. This movie is based on the first book of a trilogy by atheist Philip Pullman. In the final book a boy and girl kill God so they can do as they please. Pullman left little doubt about his intentions when he said in a 2003 interview that "My books are about killing God."
The movie is a watered-down version of the first book and is designed to be very attractive in the hope unsuspecting parents will take their children to see the movie -and that the children will want the books for Christmas.
The movie has a well known cast, including Nicole Kidman, Kevin Bacon, and Sam Elliott. It will probably be advertised extensively, so it is crucial that we get the word out to warn parents to avoid this movie.

Nevin, it's graduated from high school. If you're going to be picky about education, at least get that part correct.

Well yes the english language is going down the tubes but what he said, even if it was wrong, you all understood what he meant.

P.S I TOLD ALL MY KIDS IN SUNDAY SCHOOL ABOUT THIS BAD MOVIE
The movie was bad if you read the book, at least to me that is
Long live Reason, Observation, and Experience; the Holy trinity of Science.
I will be the first to admit that some of the language I have used has been a little harsh. This subject is fascinating and I am just trying to frame my comments in a thought provoking manner. I just got tired of sitting back while Enlightened philosophy gets trashed by people of faith.I have no anger against any so called "God" or any other magical, imaginary being.Thats for the religious nuts. I am interested in hearing your thoughts if they are not delusional or quoting millenia-old stories.Im willing to admit when I am wrong because I am not a "God" or an instrument of any "God", I am just a human, just like you.
No, Nevin you are far from being me or anything like me. Because an instrument of
God is exactly what I am. I'll pray for you and hope that God "Enlightens" you.
Debbie D
Nevin,
I’m confused by your use of the term “Enlightened Philosophy.” Not all of the philosophers of were atheists or “non-believers” like David Hume. Many had faith of some sort (and this statement is backed up by history books.) Now to head off any naysayers, I’m not saying they were Christian, I’m saying they believed in spirituality (some vehemently.) The Enlightenment was an age of reason based on faith, not an age of faith based on reason. It was a time that humanized theological systems, and released individuals from the physical coercion of established religions. The philosophers did not seize control of anything, they helps religion become very personal. (I’m quite aware that there was more to the Enlightenment than just religious reform, but that is the point of this conversation so we’ll just focus on that.) In fact, Diderot said, “if you forbid me to speak on religion and government, I have nothing to say.” Other philosophers of the time who believed in a higher power include Voltaire, René Descartes, Pascal, Rousseau, and Benjamin Franklin. By your terms these men would be considered “religious nuts” too. Remember that “religious” and “enlightened” are not antonyms. Also remember that the American forefathers were Christian men who founded a nation on Christian principles. According to your statement this fact means this country is headed for failure. In addition, I’d like to ask you to be more specific when you say that the Enlightenment provided us with “virtually everything in this modern world.” That is such a vague statement that it really carries very little weight. I’d also like to point out that Mike W. didn’t say that “air was God” he said God provided it, as he provides everything in this world. Breathing may not be a miracle to you but I bet a drowning man would think otherwise. The point is (and it is a point that has been stated here numerous times) that we all have different views on concepts and we should be tolerant of differences. I only ask that if a person makes a statement they be ready to back it up.
Oh, and by the way, although I referred to myself as a Christian in my previous post, I generally consider myself to be agnostic. By as Phillip Pullman refers to himself as a “Church of England Atheist” so am I a “Southern Baptist Agnostic.” That being said I reiterate that I had many Christian friends who see these books that way I do. Just because I don’t believe that way others do doesn’t mean I can’t see their point. I mean, even I believe that the Bible is a historical text (a history book if you will) that was written by humans (which would mean it carries the views of the authors.) While I've never heard of it being studied in college in history, there are many historical and geographical references in the book that have been proven accurate. As far as demons, angels, and the other mythological being you mentioned. Remember that fables were often used to teach lessons--Jesus often employed them. And who said anything about magical powers? If you’re speaking about miracles, consider this: on July 28, 2006 Tom Boyle of Tucson lifted a Chevrolet Camaro high enough so that the driver could pull 18-year-old cyclist, Kyle Holtrust away. Take from the situation what you will, but many believe that miraculous events like that do happen, but not at the whim of a skeptic.
I would address more of your statements but I simply don’t have time to explain the differences between Muslims and Christians nor their views on one another. I will be happy to follow up on any point of interest at a later time. These discussions are so thought provoking! Once again I apologize for any typos and thank you all for your time.
Nevin, you must have been daydreaming during the class on our enlightened academia. Sorry but, you are a Dunce.
Your the one who believes in magical beings !! Who's the Dunce??Everything Ive said can be backed up with history books, not 2000-4000 year old mythology. Can you prove me wrong historically? It sounds like you are not educated very well. You did not even cite what or where you disagreed with me.I doubt you graduated high school.
Who says the Bible is not a History Book. I think a lot of us have
forgotten that very important fact. And also, get up to date on your
history. Because now they're starting to say that some of it is not
correct.
Looks like an entertaining movie. I knew we did a lot of damage to the Taliban in Afganistan... didn't know they simply moved to the states. You people need to get a life.
What have the Enlightened given us? Virtually everything we have in this modern world. That is our proof. That is our "miracle". Now lets see what your "God"(S) have done for us.
God has given YOU and you Enlightened friends air to breath and a mind to think(its too bad you don't use it)God has given you everything in this world to use to help others, who do you think it was who enlightened the forefathers, and who was your forefathers,Christian men.
Air is not "God".Having air to breath is not a miracle. Oxygen is a gas made up of a combination of molecules. When did "God" enlighten the forefathers? What are you talking about?Im all for helping others. You dont make any sense.Show me in a history book when this "God" came down and Enlightened the founding fathers? Im sorry, but you sound delusional.
dude, western cvilization existed before christianity - they were called the Greeks and Romans.
I will say it once again. It is becoming increasingly apparent to me that it is coming down to us Enlightened thinkers to save the world just as we did in the past. If it wasn't for the Enlightenment you wouldnt be typing on your computer right now. You would still be using the bathroom on the ground and bathing twice a year.Virtually everything we have came from our Enlightened forefathers.
I have one thing to say about this whole thing and that is IF YOU DO NOT LIKE, BELIEVE, OR WANT TO BE NEAR SOMETHING THEN DO NOT. THE MORE YOU TRY TO TELL EVERYONE THE BAD THINGS ABOUT THE GOLDEN COMPASS WILL ONLY MAKE ALOT OF PEOPLE WANT TO GO AND SEE THE FILM. IF YOU LOOK BACK IN HISTORY OF OTHER CONTROVERSIAL FILMS THE MORE BAD PUBLICITY THE FILM RECIEVED, THE BIGGER THE AMOUNT OF MONEY IT MADE DUE TO THE FACT THAT ALL THE BAD PUBLICITY ACTUALLY GIVES THE FILM A BOOST IN ATTENDANCE. SO IN THE FINALE OF WHAT I AM SAYING IS THE BEST WAY TO GET PEOPLE NOT TO SEE THE FILM IS NOT TO GIVE THE FILM SO MUCH ATTENTION!!!!!!
For me, its the insult against the Enlightened philosophers who gave us everything we have now. I'm tired of standing by while religious nuts destroy the world. They are all the same, no matter the name of their "God".
Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you all have a good holiday, and have fun as well...
Merry Christmas to you as well and a happy New Year. Does that surprise you? According to your ancient belief system I shouldnt even be speaking to you. Funny eh?
no... I meant a Merry Christmas to you as well. As I've said we're all human being with different ideas and beliefs... Have a good holiday....
This is to Nevin... How can you make so many accusation against people when the things you mention have no proof of you having any knowledge about them. I don't mean to be so mean, but you should look into a little bit more about us christians, and muslims, or Roman Catholic and Jews and any other religion you are attacking, we all believe in the same God, not gods, we just believe in different ways and I'm sure none of us believe in dragons, and mythical creatures, that is called fantasy, and if you say that us religious people have not given anything to the human race, I urge you to look into the history of all religions a little more. Each and every country was built upon religion and culture. Of course the beliefs and traditions were different, but that is why we have so many different views on this movie from around the world. You may not believe in God, but you need to support you insults, especially when they are so bold. I don't know why you are so angry to attack us so called "nuts religious" people. By the way, what have you given to society to claim your any better than us??? We're all human beings. I don't mean to personally attack you, but I wanted you to know who I was addressing to.
I do not lump all people of faith under the term "religious nut", just the delusional ones. When I refer to "Gods" I mean all these so called "Gods" the human race have always worshiped. I havnt personally made any major contributions to the human race, I'm just a regular guy.I was referring to the philosophers of the Enlightenment who founded all the modern nations such as the U.S.The only countries founded on religion turned out to be complete failures and still are.I back my statements up with historical fact not thousand year old mythology. When the religious people dominated everything it was called The Dark Ages. When the Enlightened philosophers seized control it was called the Enlightenment.I would consider devils, angels, dragons, and witches, to be mythical beings. They are all in the bible(s).There is no evidence of any of that stuff. If the Ameri-christians and the Muslims believe in the same "God",then why have they always killed each other.I offer you proof---its called a history book.I apoligize if I insulted you, because you dont seem to be delusional. Can you show me anything any "God" have given us?Wheres all those magic powers you people claim to have? The Enlightened philosophers gave us everything while the "believers" were telling us about witches,devils,flat-earth,all the same things those people have always had to give. All the great discoverys were by the Enlightened not the"Believers".Your own bible says "God helps those who help themselves",a very truthful statement because thats all we have--ourselves.I and the other rational people are not going to stand by quietly while you people destroy the world that we(theEnlightened) created. Why cant your "God" or any"God" do just one miracle? How about a cure for cancer or even the common cold? Each and every country was not founded on religion, just the failures. The Founding Fathers were Enlightened, not religious nuts. You mean well, but people like you kept the human race in darkness and ignorance for thousands maybe millions of years.According to your own bible you shouldnt even be disagreeing with a man. You should thank our Enlightened forefathers for giving you the rights you have today. My proof-----History books. Thank you for being rational and not delusional like some of the other people of Faith.
Dear Nevin:
Let me recite something for you as being ONE RELIGIOUS NUT and very proud of
it. I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND TO THE
REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS ONE NATION, UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH
LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL!!!
It is written,
"AS SURELY AS I LIVE, SAYS THE LORD, EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW BEFORE ME;
EVERY TONGUE SHALL CONFESS TO GOD"....Romans 14:11. Claim what is
rightfully yours as joint heirs to the Kingdom of God. And step into the
peaceable life that Jesus died to give you. Don't let worries haunt you
any more, Nevin. God Loves You, Too!!
And I say things such as this because, as a person who believes in the peace-giving love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, I am held accountable and
so will we all be "SO THEN, EACH OF US WILL GIVE AN ACCOUNT OF HIMSELF
TO GOD. (Romans 14:12) And I highly doubt that these "Enlightened Ones"
that you speak of, that brought so much peace to our country did so by
speaking harshly against anyone. If so, I don't think that there would be
any peace at all today. May I even be so bold to say that somewhere deep
down inside they knew that indeed, God exists, and because of that
belief they kept the peace. And you're right, Nevin, our country wasn't
founded on religion. It was founded on our belief in God, not religion.
And you need to read the Bible for yourself. It doesn't say God helps those
who help themselves. It is quoted as saying "God helps those who CANNOT help
themselves." And get a revalation, Nevin. YOU have created nothing. Show
me one tree or one peace of metal or one spec of anything that you or the
"enlightened" (unquote) have created with your bare hands without first having
something to work with. The word create, by definition means....Bring into
being, cause to exist. And no one on this earth can claim to have done that.
If a tree is planted, we first hAve a seed. A seed that God gave to us. And
if you would take the time to read more than history books, you would hear
and even witness countless miracles from God. Step into a church and start
asking about some of the people that have been healed from cancer and aids.
Yes, EVEN AIDS!!! Take a chance, Nevin. Open the Bible and let God enlighten
you. I promise, you won't be disappointed when you find out that He loves
you, too.
I like to use this definition of create: "to evolve from one's own thought or imagination" - like the stories created in ancient mythology, or the stories in the bible, or perhaps even the series of books themselves. How is it that one series of imaginitive thought (CREATIVE writing) is socially acceptable (the Bible) while others are ridiculed and condemned (His Dark Materials)?
There is no cure for AIDS you brainwashed hack.
FYI Deb,
"under God" was not originally part of the Pledge. It was put there under the Eisenhower administration when we thought christianity was the most powerful weapon against communism. So please don't get all high and mighty about it. The pledge as we know it today has been around for hardly 50 years and in no way dates back to the time of our nation's founding.
