I only saw it once, but I thought that in the third one it was Jack that made the sacrifice -- he wanted the heart so he could sail forever. Instead he gave it to the dying Orlando to keep him alive.

orlando sacrificing his life by destroying davy jones heart, lord beckett's ship being blown apart as he smiles. ****, the third pirates was the best

Johnny was just brilliant as the crazy version of Capt. Jack in the 3rd one.
