Issue:

Alright I made a campaign a few weeks ago hoping to get people behind a Buffy movie.  I have been very pleased with the amount of new members and their comments.  In thinking about a possible new movie one question keeps coming up.  Should Buffy ultimately end up with Angel or Spike?

Belief:

I believe that if they do make a Whedonverse movie to tie up the loose ends of the plots of Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, that Buffy should choose once and for all which vampire she loves the most.

For anyone who isn’t familiar with this love triangle here is the most objective synopsis I can give.  Angel was Buffy’s first love.  He was her guide and protector in Sunny Dale until they had sex and he lost his soul turning into the evil Angelus.  Then he tormented her for a season until he got his soul back just before she had to send him too hell.  He, of course, got out of hell but had to bail because he got his own series set in Los Angeles.  In one of the early episodes of Angel he gets some demon blood in a cut on his hand and is turned human.  Buffy happens to be in Los Angeles at the time and it looks like they can now be together because his curse is truly lifted.  Unfortunately, he is a champion that knows his job is not yet complete so he goes to an oracle that reverses time and Buffy has no knowledge of the one amazing day they had together.   In one of the final episodes of Buffy she does insinuate that they could be together someday.

Spike arrived on the scene in the season two premiere of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  He looks and talks like Billy Idol and has very heavy influence from Luke Perry’s character, Pike, in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie starring Kristi Swanson.  His character was actually on the show much longer than Angel’s though evil for much longer.  In season 4 the military puts a chip in his head that shocks him if he tries to hurt humans.  He then discovers he can hurt Demons and becomes a pseudo good guy at the same time falling in love with Buffy even though he kind hates her too.  At the end of season six he goes to some sort of demon shaman and goes through trials and torture to get his soul back.  He and Buffy also had tons of sex because Spike was all about her and she was kind of tweaked out on account of the fact that she died went to heaven and was ripped back to earth by a magic spell.  But that is another story.

So Whedon tried to tie this up by having Spike and Angel go to Italy only to find that Buffy was dating some immortal guy called “the immortal.”  I personally thought this was lame because you don’t see Buffy.  I think Sara Michelle Gellar had other obligations at the time.

So I think the fans should decide.  If you think Buffy should be with her first love and you still remember that song that they used to play when they were together then vote for the Vampire with a soul who helps the helpless Angel.  If you feel that Buffy and Spike’s relationship was better developed in the plot and that he was more true to her because he sought out his soul and ended up later sacrificing himself to save the world then vote for the witty British rock star Vamp William the Bloody, aka Spike.

i think it should defininitely be spike. For one he wont lose his soul as soon as they get intimate and also if i do recall correctly angel was unfaithful to buffy by falling in love with cordelia in the spinoff series

For me it clearly has to be Spike...
I could go on and on about my reasons for this, but then my comments would read like a small novel...lol
So I'll try to be brief...Angel’s span as Buffy’s love interest in the show was a doomed venture from the start—what with his soul that is cursed to be ripped away at the first sign of real happiness. But he lost his soul twice more on the show Angel, which implies that Buffy wasn't the trigger everyone assumed she was in season two. So how could she be his one-and-only-true-love when he had more than one love interest after he left her?
Spike on the other hand IS an evil vampire who clearly loved Buffy despite being evil. He knew it was wrong to feel that way for her, but opposites attract, and as I recall he didn’t need to have the chip removed to kill Buffy—he could have done that at any time during season six. So why didn’t he? Well he loved her that’s why. Coz the chip sure didn't prevent him from hurting her as the rape scene proved. Then he went to Africa and gained a soul...though I'm not sure that was his intention at the time...I think he wanted the chip removed so he could become an all out killing machine again, thus forcing Buffy to have to kill him, because he couldn't kill her and she wouldn't kill him because he was helpless.
But the question is who should Buffy love now? Her first love who lost his soul, turned evil and tried to kill her…? Or the evil vampire who loved her so much that even though it was within his power to kill her for months and months he never did?
Weighing the pros and cons of it, it would for the sake of all the fans, be more fulfilling to see Buffy end up with the man/vamp that loves her the most and is therefore the person who is her true soul-mate. The question is—is Buffy old enough and wise enough to see that that person should be Spike, the man/vamp who gained a soul under suspicious reasons but clearly sacrificed it for love. Love of her!
Okay...it still reads like a small novel, *shrug* LOL...

No I really dug it. Good job.

I agree. Angela G. put together a nice bit of writing (and thinking). I enjoyed reading her thoughts too.

Thanks for that comment. I write spuffy fiction, so I'm pretty steeped in the whole Buffy / Spike relationship *grins*

I think that Buffy should choose Spike because they have a better chemistry together. Spike would go do more for than Angel ever would. They really do have more of a connection.

Spike died in the last episode of the final season. How can she choose him if he is really dead this time..? I know being a vampire makes you already dead..but he burst into flames. But if you bring him back...I'm down for some Buffy/Spike action.

After his tragic death in the end of season 7 on “Buffy”, Spike was resurrected from the medallion in season 5 on “Angel”-show. First he appears like a ghost, but then Wolfram & Hart made him corporeal again. And Spike and Angel worked together, fight against the evil senior partners and they made a lot of fun! It definitely is my favorite season in “Angel”- show! Unfortunately the show ended in the very interesting moment.
By the way Buffy doesn’t know that Spike is alive. There was an episode “The Girl in The question” - Spike and Angel supposed to meet Buffy, but in fact they didn’t. (Sara Michelle Gellar was busy with another movie and she didn’t appear in the show). I would be glad to see in the future movie that Spike and Angel to meet Buffy again. And she chooses Spike! Spike doesn’t have another girlfriend after Buffy. Angel had a lot of women in his show - Darla, Cordilia, Eve . The last Angel’s girlfriend is Nina the werewolf in season 5. Unfortunately Cordy past away. I liked her – I think she was the best choice for Angel. And Spike is the best choice for Buffy – they are very cute couple!;))

If you watch "Angel" you would have seen Spike re-appeared in 'his' show, after "Buffy" ended, so he's not dead. But I don't know which to pick, love'em both:/
I think maybe Spike needs her more than Angel do. Angel was in love with Cordelia, so can't we kinda assume that nothing is going to happen between him and Buffy...?

Look, Angel and Cordelia werent never trully in love. it was just affection and frienship and also convinient at the time. and they never shared something more than a kiss goodbuy whes she appeared (as a ghost as it turned out to be) in order to give him some guidence and hope. Darla was just desperation and one night (he says so himself) and the werewoulf was him beeing lonely and hopeless and having some sex after a long long time. and i forgot, that one night stand when he was under Lornes spell. thats it!! and all that in a period of more than 100 years. Angel only loved Buffy in his 200 something years of live.only with her did he loose his soul.

but isnt Cordelia gone?
isnt she a goddess

Spike sacrificed MORE?! C'mon GUYS! If you love someone, let them go - that's what Angel did. He walked away from his one true love because he wanted her to have as NORMAL a life as possible and fall in love with a human being, not an immortal. Seen any 'Angel'? Maybe this will jog your memory: http://www.buffyworld.com /angel/summarie... That's what Angel did for Buffy. Spike may be hotter, but Spike is just Buffy's ride. Angel is her True Love.

Spike never sacrificed anything about Buffy, since she was never really his. He had a soul for a couple of years and he tried to do something good in the end. Gave up a life he could not bare because of his new soul and the fact that he was alone. i like him. he had a good heart. but as it was proven in angel, Angel was the true "Vampire with a soul" champion. there Spike was good but not the legendary HERO. just one of the allies. Angel made all the sacrifices. more than anyone could stand doing. he left, hoping that away from him Buffy might find someone to care about and achieve some happiness. He give up his son giving him faulse memories so that he could have a normal life etc etc. he gave up his chance in being human TWICE, for the rest of the world. i could go on for days!!

But if you remember correctly, Buffy will never have the "normal" life and she and Angel tried to work it out when he came back from Hell in Season 3, but that didn't work. Ultimately, Angel has way too many ties and too many things to work through--Cordelia's death, Nina, Connor--Spike wasn't really connected to anyone except Buffy. Plus, she did tell Spike in the end of Season 7 that she loved him, he just chose not to believe her since he was dying.

Spike knew that she loved Angel thats one of the reasons he was always jealous of him. she said she loved him only because he was dying and he, since he was dying, he told her he knew the truth and that it was ok. True love is never simple and easy. Buffy and Angel didnt worked up until then because she was too young at the time and especially because he was cursed!! if they were happy he would turn evil again!! that fact never aloud them to have a possible future together at the time. but as he sais.. "im never getting any older". he will wait for her forever and she will be with him when the curse will bi lifted. the fact that Spike has no one else isnt love, is pitty.

Yeah..Buffy should choose Spike. He fought to get his soul back and died for her. And, yeah he is hotter.

It has to be Spike. He wanted to change, he fought for Buffy when he had no soul. Loved her (unlike Angel) when he had no soul. Then fought to get his soul because he wanted it, he chose it, unlike Angel who just happened to have one. And he died to save Buffy and the world. And not to break the seriousness of this post but... Spikes waaaayyy hotter. :P

Look, Angel didnt know Buffy when he had no soul. so, you shouldnt say that. He loved her always, since he met her and even when he lost his soul he loved her but was a vampire-monster and expressed it the way he could. spike had a chip. he chose to have fun killing vampires because he could not kill humans. he wanted Buffy, didnt love her. but he was a monster, didnt know what having a soul ment when he chose it in order to win buffy (that he just wanted at the time, not love). Actyally Angel, chose his soul again and again and again. he didnd "just happened to have one". He chose having a soul each time he sacrificed his chance in being human, each time he sacrificed his chance in love and happiness. Each time he chose death as a hero.

I agree with Caroline D...Spike sacrificed far more than Angel did, and he was EVIL when he chose it.

Sure, Angel is good looking and whatnot, and I really do like David Boreanaz, but I've got to go with Spike, who in the end sacrificed far more for Buffy

Completely agree! Spike chose to love Buffy without a soul, what did Angel do? Oh yeah, he KILLED people and tried many times to kill Buffy, too. Long live Spuffy.

Spuffy forever!!!;))

GREAT answers everyone.
-LOVE!

SPUFFY, INDEED.
I think buffy should be with spike for MANY reasons; most of which have been given.
Don't get me wrong, i LOVE angel, but it's just not practical.
Their love might have been more true than buffy's love for spike while it lasted, but it's about the FUTURE - not dwelling on the past. Buffy and Spike have shared a closeness and a friendship that Buffy and Angel never had. They've come to know eachother on a much more psychological level, and they've endured the most together.
Not only that, but Spike is the most deserving of Buffy. Someone said in here that they think initially spike's intention for going to africa was to get the chip removed. OH NO IT WASN'T - that's what the audience was MEANT to think before they learned better, but it's clear from Spike's attitude in S7, and his church monologue, that he intended to get back his soul all aong. As man AND monster Spike loved Buffy. Joss always said spike was an anomily - there's just something special about him becuase he's a moster, but one capable of incredible compassion, wisdom and depth. He and Drew were in LOVE for AGES...but Angel admits he never loved Darla. It's not Angel's fault, becuase he's spectacular, but Spike is just more special.
Also, Sarah and James have a great friendly chemistry, which really adds to the whole thing.

OH, AAAND i've decided what i believe happens after the last episode of angel
(the comics don't count, becuase they're just joss clinging to something that's OVER. you can't continue the two shows without the essence of the characters. You can create something separate, but Buffy and Angel create a lot of their atmosphere through the actors. a lot is determined by their chemistry with one another. Without them, it's just NOT right)
but yes, in the last scene of angel as the demons are running towards them, the guys (and girl) fight. Gunn dies pretty quickly and heroicly. Illyria (or whatever) fights for ages and kills a heck of a lot of people before she gets her arse kicked too. Meanwhile, buffy and her massive gang of slayers catch wind of the battle and go to angel's aid. Angel slays a big dragon or some ****, and does really well. Then angel and spike meet against another fancy demon. The fight is really rough, and angel's about to be killed, but Spike hops in the way and sacrifices (or so he thinks) his life to save angel. People are all teary and frightened, but then a big beam of light shoots down from the sky to spike (like in the last ep of buffy) Buffy is nearby without realising, when she's like "wtf? - a big beam of light." She makes her way over in the fighting and sees angel by the light all shocked looking. She can't see who is in the light, though, becuase some big-arse demon is in the way. she kills it and then sees spike there. Everything goes all slow-mo and she gets all shocked and teary. she yells out to him and he sees her. She runs over to him and into the light, where she hugs him; head on his chest.
the light suddenly disappears and she's like "wtf?" (slo-mo stops) and all of a sudden she can hear his heart beating - he's human.
Then some cool **** happens and they get out of the big mess.
angel dies to save them or somebody and he's pretty jolly about that. he becomes an actual angel or some ****...eh.
THE END!

i really like your ending:) it's much better than the real one's.

Angel and Buffy definitely!
I have to say I don't know much about Angel the show(never watched it regularly)but I just can't see how Buffy and Angel can be in the same town or place or whatever and not be together. It seems to me that whatever relationships they've had after they separated were to "make do" without the other.Plus let's be honest and put some pragmatism in the question, nobody would have watched any of the shows if the protagonists had kept brooding over their old loves and never got any action with new partners! Of course they came to love the people they were around, but I don't think that Buffy and Angel can stay long in the same place without reviving the flame... Don't get me wrong, I loved Spike, hot and funny and all, but I just don't see a future for him and Buffy, especially if Angel is around!
Also, it's nonsense to blame Angel for not choosing to get his soul back for Buffy, he got it back 80 years before he knew her, it's asking a little too much! And remember, even if in season 2 he SAYS to Spike and Dru that he wants to kill Buffy, he never seems to be able to do it (and it sure pisses him off!) like when he left the drawing? maybe it was to make her feel insecure, but you don't draw a woman in her sleep the way he did if you don't love her, even in some twisty, vampiry kind of way... So of course there's the "if I have sex with you I'll lose my soul" part, but come on, with everything that the writers came up with along the years, don't tell me there's no way around that if they really want to make it happen... And it will be solved anyway if Angel finds his way back to humanity...
Again, I really liked what Buffy had with Spike, it was funny and sexy, good to watch, but it never brought me to tears the way Angel and Buffy's story did, many times! So yeah, I want to see them together again and see them happy for a change!!! Maybe I'm just an old fashioned romantic who still wants to believe in fairy tales, but hey, that's fiction right, not real life, so let's indulge in perfect tomantic stuff...:)
Angel and Buffy's got my vote, loud and clear:)

nice comment!!! Angel and Buffy had love scenes!! Buffy and Spike were the next best and convinient for the producers, thing. they had sex scenes.. and in both series, no matter what they did with their love lives, they never found that love they had together before and even after he lost and re-found his soul. you should really see the Angle series!! it has amazing moments between them and its a great show.
Actually, in one year, in both shows Angel not even once didnt mention Buffy and vice versa. I am convinced that the producers tried to completely divide the 2 shows. but it didnt work out.. the next year angel appeared in Buffys last season and for the 2 years of angel, Angel was always in love with Buffy.
