Description:

Issue:

STEVE FOSSETT HAS BEEN FOUND. THANK YOU EVERYONE!

YOUCHOOSE.NET OFFERS A $10,000 REWARD TO THE FIRST YOUCHOOSE MEMBER WHO PROVIDES INFORMATION LEADING TO THE RESCUE OF STEVE FOSSETT.  TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!  PLEASE READ ON:

On Monday, September 3, 2007, Steve Fossett, the first person to fly a plane solo around the world without refueling and the first person to fly around the world in a balloon went missing in Nevada. An airplane he was flying failed to return. No one has any idea where he is.

Through the generous efforts of individuals at several organizations, detailed satellite imagery has been made available for his last known whereabouts.

Belief:

I believe that if we each take a little time looking at the satellite images and marking those that may have signs of Fossett in them, we could find him or determine what happened to him.

I pledge to...

Look at satellite pictures and mark those that appear to have evidence of Steve Fossett.  get started here

I'm pretty much done here, time for somebody new to take over my spot of reviewing possible things in pictures and giving 2nd oppinions.  I've got a couple sailboats I need to sell on eBay this week.  It's been fun, and I learned a lot, hopefully next time we have to do something like this it will now go a lot smoother.  Good luck.  Somebody needs to write up what we learned. I'll be happy to add my two cents, just email me.   I'll probably review some more hits but I've got to cut down the Google earth stuff.  I'll check in every once in a while.  Glad to help.

Everyone appreciates all of your time and hard work Jon !!!! ty
I wanted to let everyone know how appreciative the people I've talked with on the search team in Nevada and at Amazon's Mechanical Turk are about the efforts you are all making.  Here's part of an email I just received from Amazon in response to my asking them about any new images they might have for us outside the original search area:
Mike --

I don't have any information about the specific search areas being covered. When Google receives imagery from satellite providers, they procss it. When we receive data from Google Earth we make it available as HITs.

With respect to KMLs, we encourage participants to review the HITs primarily since each lead submitted via a HIT is automatically processed and fed to searchers as a result. Manual submissions, in contrast, must be filtered out of e-mails, blog postings, forum postings and take much longer to process.

As I get more information, I will be sure to make it available to you and your members. We truly appreciate your efforts and contributions.

Thanks for everything

whats needed is a new KML file taken after 3 sep 2007 that will encompass the area of pyramid lake and northeast of there, as thats where I think steve fossett went down, the salt flats are just north of there, where i believe he planned to try to set a new land speed record soon.

he was a great pilot so he probably had engine failure at a bad alltitude and time or got caught in katabatic winds flowing down the mountains in the AM pushing him down to the trees, need a new KML file for that area i mentioned, the present KML file is only good for the southern part down by Flying M ranch and area,

When I look for certain objects in the overlay area my computer gets extremely slow - streaming and movements. Is this normal or is there a way to keep things moving at the same speed as the old maps?

Jreese

Mine is pretty slow too, My laptop wouldn't even run Google earth.  Jon Held www.jheld.mysite.com

Swear I can make out a prop, main plane body facing S/SW. Can even see the wheels. If it's a rock...Heck of a rock!

Appears to measures larger then Steves plane though. Must be older crash.
reply after next one down. my mistake. Jon Held www.jheld.mysite.com

An actual airplane here.  You must have access to the original/first .kml file and load it prior to looking at this target.  DO NOT USE THE NEW .KML FILE FOR THIS TARGET.

 38°28'55.72"N 119°24'17.61"W

You can access that original area, by running the original KML file, see a couple lines down, I talk about that.  This most likely is a plane flying in the air. colors aren't right for Steve's plane.   Jon Held www.jheld.mysite.com
I see a round white area 34 feet in diameter and a simlliar sized discolored (sort of redish) area with brush in it south of that.  Jon Held www.jheld.mysite.com

this was supposed to be a reply to teresa G next one above 38.595806, -119.076926

This looks like a crash because the tail section is deformed/bent.  It does have dark tint around the wing tips and cowl.  Good find.
I don't thinik you can judge bent tail and such with only 4 pixels across a wing.  Can't possibly resolve anything less than a foot or more. My oppinion.   Jon Held www.jheld.mysite.com

John, take a look at this.  I cannot find it on the old images.  A large white object in the river and downstream about 100 yards to the NNW another white object ~12' long.

 38°25'46.41"N 119° 1'23.23"W

I agree a white thing in the river, it shows up on both the snow and the green, on the old view you can't tell if it's there because it would be in the deep shadows on that view.  For the record at this location the snow is displaced 244 feet slightly north of east and the green is displaced 476 feet NW.  Nothing indicates it might be a plane part but it's something.  Thanks  Jon Held www.jheld.mysite.com

Found something to look at. I checked landmarks against old overlay.

38.765406, -118.912271

Right below a snow covered rock. Looks like something (plane?) leaning over. Could also be more snow. But wanted someone else to check it out.

I can't say I see anything, thanks  Jon Held www.jheld.mysite.com

HI.....

when you type in flying m ranch and it takes you there 30 50 40 05n   94 57 47 34 w  at 3246 ft...  i see two planes..one is blue, could that be steves....sorry about the mess ups but water got on my keyboard and its not working to well..i have have been working outside of the area where they have been looking...blurry eyes here..may we find steve, alive, ...carrie p.

Finally I can view the hit I found a couple days ago, I've talked about it and all the problems I've had trying to view it and marked it as a possitive hit but here it is in all it's glory for others to critique.  This is the location it looks like a plane setting on a rock titled up, engine to sky covered with snow, an oblique view.  38°30'19.92"N  118°59'36.92"W  and I don't see it in old images.  View it in the central snow covered satellite images.  I captured a screen shot if you have trouble and want a pic emailed, and also have the hit saved too.  We learn after time.

 Jon Held www.jheld.mysite.com

Can you email the shot to me? I looked at your coord. But cannot see anything. Thx

John, pls email screen shot.  I've copied your coords into GEarth, and looked at both Fosset overlays of the area.  Can't find a thing.  I'm wondering if this is another example of whacky coords.  I won't see you pic until this evening, but would help troubleshoot this problem.  My concern is that someone really does see something, but nobody else can find it.  That would be a tragedy.

I put the screen shot and the hit on my website.   http://www.jheld.mysite.c om/photo_4.html

I know it's pretty tough to see.  I racked my brain for a couple hours trying to get a closer look, in the end it took two days.

I can't help but wonder if there isn't some form of radar that could help isolate metal objects from the background of rock, dirt, etc. Even if it wasn't extremely sensitive, it could be used to verify visual sightings. You could put some plane scraps against a rock background and try different radar types, settings, or whatever until it produced the best results. Just like pulling up faded text by identifying pale colors not detectable by human eyesight and swapping them with black, a return could be compared to background data and enhanced depending on it's slightly unique return. I used this method on faded mimeograph text: http://www.sooper grape.com/gooch-smithli...
It should work on any data if a consistent variation of the return signal can be confirmed for different materials.

Just my 2 cents.

Dan
