Before there was the first chicken, there was a previous species which evolved into the chicken. At some point, that species laid an egg which hatched into the first individual of the chicken.

Of course the chicken came first, no matter how you look at it, if you go by evolutions they evolt to be chicken, in religion they were created first, and in the aliens creating life on earth the chickens were brougth from out of space.
Of course the chicken came first! When Noah was on the earth, just before the flood, God had Noah put two of every animal (NOT EGGS) on Noah's ark, one female & one male. Of course, for those of you that don't believe in God, let's use the example of a monkey (ha ha ha)-how do eggs enter into THAT one? Lisa Lou Hemet, CA
First of all, what does Noah have to do with this ? Chicken existed before Noah came around and so did eggs. And for the monkeys you replace egg with embryo. If you're going to post some arguments for the debate, at least pick something revelant please.

A team made up of a geneticist, philosopher and chicken farmer claim to have found an answer. The egg.
Put simply, the reason is down to the fact that genetic material does not change during an animal's life. Therefore the first bird that evolved into what we would call a chicken, probably in prehistoric times, must have first existed as an embryo inside an egg.
Thank you Mary! A very correct and completely logical point. A never really understood why their was a debate. As soon as you learn evolution in school you should know the answer.

So chicken first.
God the creator has made my grandma first then here I am..
Egg first... chicken second
Eggs came first because dinosaurs layed eggs long before chickens ever existed.

Chickens had to evolve from something - they didn't just spring into existence - so whatever they evolved from was laying eggs.

I ask, where did the embryo come from?
