FACT: We will all age. If you're reading this, the odds are that you're a football fan: you go to games with mates, have a laugh (or cry) and sing your heart out for your club. I love it, you love it, the players, the clubs, the media - we all love that aspect of the game. Generation follows generation, come rain or shine. BUT WHAT IF, AFTER DECADES OF LOYAL SUPPORT, DUE TO DIMINISHED HEALTH, FINANCES & COMMUNITY YOU COULDN'T GET TO A GAME ANY MORE? Despite unerring support through thick and thin there is little recognition given to the older football fan that finds themself in exactly that situation. ARE WE, AS FOOTBALL FANS, HAPPY WITH THAT?
Belief:
AS FANS, WE ARE OUR CLUBS... our chairmen and owners are our clubs' custodians. They apreciate this and listen to the fans they inherit and that will be there when they have moved on. For most of us, someone took us to a game, bought us a replica shirt or just plain told us to follow our clubs as kids - someone else got them involved and so on. "SILVER SATURDAY" is for those that came before us. A tribute and a committment to enable older fans to get to the game that usually cannot. Clubs will be asked to donate at least 1% of the gate to charities for the elderly (TBC) and to allocate free seating for our "silver" support. We can make it happen! I am committed to having West Ham Utd participate, which club can you get to play?
