I was watching a program on TV last night. There is this federal land next to these ranchers in some state that I cannot remember what state. The prairie dogs were digging holes and eating a lot of the grass that the cattle grazed in. Because of drought, there was not much grass for the cattle to graze.

I understand the dilemma of the ranchers, but there is a species called the Black footed Ferret that was almost extinct until the government started raising them in captivity and releasing them in the wild. In order for that species to make a good come back, they must have the prairie dogs to survive. The prairies dog is the Black footed ferrets main food supply as well as other animals in the area. The rancher didn't want to deal with the habitat of the black foot ferret. The black footed ferret would take care of the ranchers prairie dog problem, and leave the grass for his cattle to graze. Ranchers could deal with the ferrets habitat, or make shelters for them to live.

From what I understood, the federal government intends to poison prairie dogs within ten foot all along the federal land that sits next to the ranchers land. I think this is a stupid idea. If we kill animals that are part of a main food chain, we kill other animals in the long run. They will not have food to eat.

Please sign my petition to save the prarie dogs and not poison them so that the the Black Footed Ferret can make a come back?

The pairie dogs have just as much right to live freely where ever they want as we do don't hurt or kill the pairie dogs.

I have been busy on another thread, but I want to get back to one of my favourite causes, animal rights. To speak for those who can't speak for themselves. Nature does everything in balance. I wonder if we didn't destroy that balance? I hope to do more research. The petitioner says above that they have a natural preditor. I'd like to know what happened to them, I bet it was something we humans did. But poison is cruel to prairie dogs and it's stupid. It kills other animals indiscriminately. I did some reading and another part of the reason, besides eating grass needed for grazing, which I think is weird, how much can a prairie dog eat, if they are really worried food supply for cattle, how about planting legumes, which are good for the soil because they fix nitrogen in it or grow some hay, eh? Also what happened to the old fashioned land rotation practice of growing forage? Growing forage allows the farmer to give one seventh of the land every year. It helps stop animal disease because the cattle are moved to forage area to forage area during the year and that helps preserve the soil from too much wear and tear from the cattle, it is also biblical.

Thanks for bringing up the plight of the black footed ferret. Giving the ferret protection would solve two problems at once. The trouble with poison is that if gophers will eat it, other animals will too. I hope the government listens to your idea, it's a far better solution.

The black footed ferret is one of the most endangered mammals in North America. I guess poisoning the prairie dog will seal its fate!
