Description:

The Miami Herald ran a story today on planned schoolwide budget cuts. The story cites that the school board is in a financial crisis and are postponing teacher salaries, eliminating transportation, cutting summer programs and raising the price of school lunch. Education is one of the most important things we can give our children. Coupled with good food and good teachers, our children will thrive into productive citizens of our society. Instead our city is financing a proposed $500 million baseball stadium. A job at a sports stadium is seasonal, part time, menial and contract work. These jobs do not provide health insurance and require minimal education. This is what our children look forward to because their education was cut short by budget cuts.

The purpose for this petition is to raise awarness that our schools and teachers need this money. We need to insure our children's future. The only way to do this is through proper education.

We should fully fund the school system first, insuring our children a bright future.

Fund the baseball stadium which only provides part time, low wage earning jobs that require minimal education.

I have to disagree with Bill C below.....school IS for education but I see first hand how scholastic athletics is a POSITIVE influence on kids today and keeps them off the streets!!

I just don't understand why our government representatives thinks it's more important to support a bunch of professionals who are already earning millions of dollars rather than supporting our childrens educations!! Parents should not have to pay $600 just to have their kids play ball in a public school system which we are paying for with taxes already.

Probably because our governmental representatives have their children exactly where they want them.

I think they should fund HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL/FOOTBALL/SOCCER, etc. and let the Professional Business of Baseball buy, rent or build their own Stadium!! What other businesses have the government pay their rent or purchase them a building to work in??????????

I think sports are a waste of time and money. Children are in school for education, not to learn how to play sports and abuse drugs. I would like to see all sports banned. Pro and college included. Bill C.
